Ledger Crypto Hardware Wallets: What You Need to Know Before Buying

My old friend Myetherwallet has long and tirelessly reminded me how wrong it is for me, Uncle Egor, to eat a sandwich by accessing it through a browser using a private key. Using web wallets is one of the risky ways to access crypto assets along with storing them on a crypto exchange. It was high time to explore alternative options. Public opinion, of course, was in favor of hardware wallets. But I was in no particular hurry: protection from hackers is, of course, an argument. But no one has canceled offline threats - in life, losing something happens much more often. And external associations with flash drives did not add confidence.

But sooner or later you need to face your fears, so Madrobots offer to test the Ledger Nano S

it came in very handy. As well as the fact that the review came out on Black Friday - so the Nano S is now with a 50% discount until Sunday - with the collapse in price, the discounts are especially relevant.

Principle of operation

The two main parameters of any crypto wallet are the public and private keys.

  • The public key is commonly called the wallet address and, in essence, performs exactly this function - it finds the desired wallet in the blockchain. One wallet can have many different public keys.
  • The private key is responsible for access to the wallet, this is, in fact, the key - it is the only one and should be known and belong only to the account owner.

And Ledger Nano S is the physical embodiment of the private key. First, you need to use it to create a wallet for one of the 30+ supported crypto coins, after which it will be required to confirm any transactions.

The private key generated when creating the wallet remains on the flash drive itself, recorded on a secure ST31H320 chip, which is also used to store data from biometric passports and credit cards.

Restrictions

Like any key, the Nano S requires an appropriate “lock”. The main functions for managing created wallets are taken over by the Ledger Live application for Windows, Mac, Linux or Chrome OS.

However, the default cord that comes with the Nano S does not match the Macs: for several years they have only come with USB-C ports, so hello, adapter, my old friend.

However, if you are going to purchase this wallet, then it makes sense to add a microUSB to USB-C cable to it (€15 on the manufacturer’s website - however, you can probably order an analogue at several times cheaper from the other end of Eurasia).

In any case, this is a worthwhile idea, because with this cord, Ledger Nano S can also be used on Android with the MyCelium wallet.

But, unfortunately, I did not find any options for compatibility with iPhone.

In case of loss of the Ledger itself

But a big plus, unlike most other items of the material world, is the ability to restore access to the wallet if lost.
To do this, a recovery procedure using a mnemonic phrase, familiar to any user who has ever dealt with their own crypt, is used, which is 24 words generated when the Nano S is launched, which are supposed to be written down on a piece of paper, and the piece of paper should be stored in a secret place.

The importance of writing down a mnemonic phrase by hand is reminded by the stack of special cards that comes with the wallet.

  • On the one hand, this is good - because it allows you to restore access to all wallets managed with Ledger Nano S from another device.
  • On the other hand, this is bad because it allows you to restore access to all wallets managed with Ledger Nano S from another device.

In other words, with Ledger you don’t have to worry about irretrievably losing the “key” to your crypto-treasures - but you do need to worry about losing the card with the list of magic words.

Ledger Products

The French company has been operating since 2014 and is dedicated to creating secure solutions for blockchain applications. The company has two main activities: the production of hardware wallets and the implementation of its own BOLOS operating system for all future IoT services. Ledger was one of the first organizations to market a cryptocurrency cold storage device, the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet in 2016.

Hardware wallets are special physical media in the form of a USB key without an Internet connection. They are one of the safest methods for cryptocurrency transactions because they provide offline or “cold” storage of digital funds. It is extremely difficult to access the coins on the device, since this will require not only a password, but also the wallet itself, which is shaped like a “flash drive.”

As of July 2022, Ledger employs more than 130 employees in Paris, Vierzon and San Francisco. Over the 6 years of its existence, in addition to the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet, the team has created other products: an improved version of the Ledger Nano X hardware storage, as well as an application for storing and purchasing digital coins, Ledger Live.

In addition to creating products, Ledger is dedicated to educating users about the world of cryptocurrency. For this purpose, a free educational portal Ledger Academy has been created. It is a collection of informational and educational articles and video lessons, divided into sections:

  • blockchain;
  • cryptocurrency;
  • cryptosecurity;
  • hardware wallets;
  • Ledger Nano user guide.

All articles and videos on the Ledger Academy resource, like the official Ledger website itself, are presented only in English or French versions. You can use the built-in translator feature in the Google Chrome browser to familiarize yourself with the company's products and educational portal about cryptocurrency. To do this, right-click on the page you want to translate and select "Translate to Russian" .

The company is constantly developing and improving its products. Despite the COVID 19 pandemic, the first half of 2022 was productive for the organization:

  • in January, the Ledger Live application was launched in desktop and mobile versions for managing cryptocurrencies;
  • in February, it became possible to store Hedera (XBAR) and Ravencoin (RVN) coins in a hardware wallet;
  • in February, the company developed its own application to improve 2FA (two-factor authentication) security, certified by U2F FIDO and it was implemented in Ledger Nano hardware devices;
  • an updated version of the Ledger Live application appeared in March;
  • in April, it became possible to use the platform for payments using cryptocurrency сrypto.com as an option to pay for goods on the official website ledger.com and receive cashback in the amount of 10% of the purchase amount.
  • in April, the cryptocurrencies Stellar and Tron (TRX) began to be supported by Ledger Live;
  • in May, the company released original sweatshirts in its crypto clothing line;
  • in June, the Ledger Live application added the ability to purchase cryptocurrency through a partner of the Coinify company;
  • At the end of June, the Cosmos (ATOM) currency was introduced into the Ledger Live application.

Settings

To set up wallet management, you need to do three more steps:

  1. Connect the device to the PC.
  2. Enter your PIN code.
  3. Install the Ledger Manager app, which is available free for Chrome for Windows, Mac OS, Linux or Chrome OS;

Only 4 cryptocurrencies (and the 2FA module) can be stored in the Nano S device’s memory at the same time. If you are not currently using a particular type, you can safely remove it and install another one in its place. Don't worry, all your savings will be completely safe.

In addition to the Chrome apps extension, you can use the following managers to work with cryptocurrencies:

  • Bitcoin-Ledger-Wallet – for Bitcoins, Litecoins, Dash coins (uses the Segregated Witness and Legacy code protocol);
  • Ethereum-Ledge-Wallet;
  • Ripple-Ledger-Wallet;
  • for ERC-20 tokens, the wallet must be connected to My-Ether-Wallet.

Ledger Nano S

It is the very first hardware wallet to receive Level 1 Security Certification (CSPN) from the French National Cyber Security Agency (ANSSI). Appeared in 2016.

ANSSI is an official French government body reporting to the General Secretariat for National Defense and Security (SGDSN). They are involved in product certification, conducting various tests and evaluating software, security, access and authentication, identification and firewall protection. Ledger management stated that receiving a certificate is an important assessment of their product from a third independent party.

The Ledger Nano S has a micro-USB port that allows you to connect it to a computer or smartphone. The benefit of the device is that your private keys will be generated and stored offline directly on the Nano S, making any hacking attempt impossible.

Supports hundreds of well-known cryptocurrencies, in particular, Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20 tokens, DASH, Bitcoin Cash, Ark, ZCash, Cosmos, Litecoin.

Ledger Nano S Specifications

  1. LED screen 128x32.
  2. Two navigation buttons.
  3. Micro-USB port.
  4. Size: 98 mm x 18 mm x 9 mm.
  5. Weight 16.2 g.
  6. Case materials: plastic, stainless steel.
  7. Security chips ST31H320 and STM32F042.
  8. CC EAL5+ certified.

CC EAL5 + means a security standard where verification is carried out using almost all kinds of mathematical methods. Only military standards are higher, which, for example, are met by the operating system for NASA fighter planes and space devices.

Setup and use

  1. Connect the device to your computer using the micro-USB cable included in the package.
  2. You will be prompted to create a four to eight digit PIN on your device screen. You can move the numbers higher or lower using the buttons. Once you reach the desired number, press both buttons simultaneously to select the next number. You will then have to repeat this process to confirm your PIN.
  3. Once you have set your PIN, you will be prompted to write down a recovery dictionary phrase. The words will be displayed one by one, just press the right button to see the next word. The length of the mnemonic phrase can be 12, 18 or 24 words at the user's choice.

Ledger provides a piece of paper that you can use to write down your phrase. It contains fields for 24 words, which must appear in strict order.

  1. The Nano S will then ask you to confirm your phrase by asking for two random words from it.
  2. If everything is ok, you will be taken to the Ledger live manager page to interact with the Ledger Nano S using your computer.

To manage and operate Ledger Nano S, you can use any cryptocurrency wallet, for example, the MyEtherWallet storage for Ethereum. The software recommended by the developers is Ledger Live. With this manager you can work with no more than 20 tokens at a time. Although there are more than 700 cryptocurrencies available to work on Ledger Nano S, and more than 70 for Ledger Live.

What is the screen for?

The device screen when setting up storage generates a recovery phrase. The recovery phrase is a complete backup of your wallet. On a regular wallet, such as a smartphone wallet, the recovery phrase is displayed on the screen of the phone that has Internet access. Because of this, there is a chance that the phrase will be stolen, and, therefore, the coins in the wallet too. The screen is needed to avoid revealing the recovery phrase on your computer - when using a hardware wallet, it is generated offline and only appears on the Nano S screen. This ensures that when you use the Ledger wallet, the phrase will never appear on an internet-connected device.

How to lose cryptocurrencies. Option one

Remember at the beginning of the article I talked about a friend who persuaded me to buy bitcoins? We actually bought it, and at a very attractive rate. If I'm not mistaken, it was 3 thousand dollars per BTC. The scheme is simple: they deposited money on a common bank card, dealt with Localbitcoins and received the coveted numbers in the balance line.

And then the bull run began. Our eyes, people without much knowledge in the industry, lit up. After short negotiations, a few months later we decided to exchange part of the investment for altcoins.

Those were great times. We felt like real investors, although we were essentially choosing random cryptocurrencies based on the beauty of their name and the steepness of their growth in recent weeks.

— Watch how Ethereum grows. Surely it will grow more, right? Let's take it!

In general, more than half of the initial amount went into other coins. What to do next is unknown. I added all balances to my Delta portfolio, regularly updated rates and mentally divided the profit by two. Half for me, half for a friend.

Buying cryptocurrency

Guess what happened next? That's right, we successfully missed the bullrun.

I still remember the moment of the sharp collapse of the Ethereum price in January 2018. Then I was driving in the car in the passenger seat and for the first time I regretted getting involved with this topic.

But the trick is that in the end I had zero left from all the investments. Not a thousand, not a hundred, but precisely zero. How so? A friend left our coins on the exchange; there were some problems with access. As a result, in order to receive coins, I had to write to technical support, but it didn’t come to that. My friend simply disappeared from my life. Communication suddenly stopped, I still don’t know the reasons. Obviously, those coins end up on a blocked exchange account. By the way, I don’t even remember which one.

This is me when a friend left in 404

Conclusion: if I had kept coins on the ledger back then, I would now have a cooler portfolio. In addition, the profitability figures would be more pleasant. Still, that Bitcoin at 3 thousand is still cheaper than today’s 4,752 bucks.

Ledger Nano X

In 2022, the company released an improved version of the Nano S called Ledger Nano X. Only the display was increased externally.

New to the Nano X is the addition of Bluetooth. This allows you to connect to the Ledger Live app without a USB cable. For the same task, the wallet is equipped with a battery that holds a charge for several hours.

The list of supported cryptocurrencies is long: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, many altcoins. You can find the full list here.

Specifications

  1. LED screen 128x64.
  2. Two navigation buttons.
  3. USB 2.0 port.
  4. Bluetooth.
  5. Size: 72mm x 18.6mm x 11.75mm.
  6. Weight 34 g.
  7. Case materials: plastic, stainless steel.
  8. Battery 100 mAh.
  9. ST33 security chip.
  10. CC EAL5+ certified.

Setup and use

You can install and configure the wallet in the same way as Nano S. To manage coins, you need the Ledger Live application or a third-party application, for example, MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto.

While the Nano S can only manage 20 coin vaults at a time, the Nano X can manage 100. This rollout follows criticism that users have regularly leveled at the Ledger Nano S, where apps had to be uninstalled and reinstalled to access specific tokens.

Regarding the Bluetooth connection, many expressed concerns that this function would negatively affect security, since this method of communication also has the possibility of data interception by attackers. However, the developers reassured users and pointed out that:

  • No important data is transmitted via Bluetooth: private keys and mnemonic phrases never leave the Nano X;
  • even if your Bluetooth connection is hacked, the security system built into Ledger Nano X will ask for confirmation for every action performed;
  • If the Bluetooth feature is of concern, you can disable it.

Ledger Live app

The application allows you to manage your cryptocurrencies via a computer or smartphone and is supported by all Ledger Nano S and Nano X wallets. It is a proprietary development of the company.

In addition to sending and receiving digital coins, the application allows you to monitor their price in real time. Ledger Live uses data from the Kraken exchange to do this, but you can choose another platform to do this with in a few clicks. Recently, the program has also made it possible to buy cryptocurrency through the company’s partner Coinify.

Here you can find complete instructions for using the application in Russian and with screenshots of the interface. It will teach you how to use the Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S wallets using Ledger Live.

Ledger Live desktop app does not support 32-bit OS

You can download the Ledger Live program on the manufacturer’s official website in the Downloads section.

What cryptocurrencies does Ledger support?

With Ledger Live you can manage 26 coins and over 1,250 ERC-20 tokens. Among them: Ethereum, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Digibyte, Dogecoin, Tezos, Ripple, Stellar, Tron, etc.

A complete list of coins supported by Ledger Live can be found on the official website.

Some coins are compatible with the Ledger Nano hardware wallet, but are not supported by Ledger Live. For them, you need to additionally install applications to work with this particular cryptocurrency. For example, for the EOS coin, download Fairy-wallet, to work with Binance Coin (BNB) - Magnum Wallet or Binance exchange storage.

Google Chrome app

Once the initial setup is done, you only need to install the application to interact with the device (for example, send or receive bitcoins). Applications must be installed only from the manufacturer’s website https://www.ledgerwallet.com/apps

To use the application's capabilities, you will need to install an extension for the Chrome browser, which has all the necessary functionality:

  • General information about the account;
  • Sending bitcoins from a hardware wallet;
  • Generation of Bitcoin addresses for receiving Bitcoins;
  • Account settings (exchange rate, language, etc.).

The Russian language in the Ledger Live application is enabled as follows:

  1. Click on the gear and go to settings.
  2. Go to the last tab “Experimental features”.
  3. Turn on the Translation testing item.
  4. Go to the “General” tab.
  5. Select Russian language in the “Display language” item.

Protection system

Ledger positions its hardware wallets as products with the highest security standards.

  1. Ledger is the first and only hardware wallet on the market certified by the French cybersecurity agency ANSSI.
  2. The software integrates a secure element (SE), a chip designed to protect against sophisticated attacks and capable of securely storing cryptographic data such as private keys.
  3. Ledger wallets are the only hardware wallet that has its own OS (BOLOS) to protect the device from malicious attacks and isolate applications from each other.

BOLOS (Blockchain Open Ledger Operational System) is an operating system from the Ledger company, on the basis of which developers around the world can write their own applications for various devices: consumer electronics, medical services, logistics and transportation, transport.

  1. All private keys and passwords are displayed only on the screen of the offline device and do not reach smartphones or PCs connected to the Internet. This prevents the possibility of theft of data to access cryptocurrency by attackers.
  2. Access to the hardware storage is carried out using a 4-8 character pin code and a 24-word mnemonic phrase that only the owner knows.

More about security

As you have already noticed, the new Ledger Wallet Nano S is equipped with a display and control buttons. This allows you to take advantage of an additional authentication factor directly from the device. Those. allows you to set and enter security data without going through your computer, thereby providing protection against phishing. This was the main improvement in terms of security compared to the previous version.

Wherein:

  • Device data is erased if you enter the wrong PIN code three times in a row. Because the code is entered directly from the device, the developers eliminated the need to reboot the Ledger Nano S after each unsuccessful attempt to enter the pin. However, in order to avoid permanent data loss, it is possible to restore the wallet using a mnemonic phrase.
  • The mnemonic phrase for recovery is 24 words in the correct order. The phrase is generated directly on the device (and not in an application on the computer, as in previous versions), shown on the device and must be written down in a secluded place or on a card.

To use a mnemonic phrase during recovery, you will have to enter all 24 words on the device using two buttons on the case. In order to simplify the task, the manufacturer has provided the ability for the user to select a word from a list of options after entering the first 3-4 letters.

According to the developers, the hardware wallet application data is stored on a secure element inside the device (model: ST31H320). At the same time, a significant part of the code (primarily software for wallets) is publicly available on GitHub.

Gradually, the company plans to open more and more information about the code, leaving hidden only parts with partner software related to the functioning of the hardware (processor initialization, memory, etc.).

How to recover your Ledger wallet

If your Ledger Nano wallet is lost or damaged, its contents can be fully restored to a new Ledger Nano device or other wallets that support BIP39, BIP44 standards. Moreover, not only hardware ones.

BIP39, BIP44 – standards for generating keys and mnemonic phrases. BIP 44 allows you to create standard phrases of 12 words, and BIP39 phrases with a larger number of words.

You will need:

  • new hardware wallet;
  • USB cable;
  • mnemonic phrase from an old wallet;
  • computer;
  • downloaded and installed the Ledger Live app.

Recovery algorithm:

  1. Connect the cold storage to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. On the Lendger Nano, press both buttons at the same time to select the “Restore from recovery phrase” .
  3. Press both buttons when your device displays “Choose PIN code .
  4. Enter your PIN.
  5. Confirm your PIN by entering it again.

  7. Enter your secret recovery phrase, following the word order from 1st to last. The device will prompt you to enter the first couple of letters of each word, and then select the desired one from the list.
  8. After successfully entering the phrase, “Your device is now ready” . This means your wallet has been restored.

How to lose cryptocurrencies. Option two

After that incident, I started buying coins on my own. Still, I got burned, became smarter and began to trust only myself. But have I become smarter about storing cryptocurrencies? Of course not.

Where else to store your savings, if not on the super-reliable Cryptopia?

It was no coincidence that I chose Cryptopia. At one time, I experimented with masternodes and even wrote about my experience in a separate article. In general, I wandered there to buy a DeviantCoin coin - remember this one? But in the end, for some reason, a small part of bitcoins was added to the exchange.

Cryptopia interface

Everyone knows what happened next. Cryptopia was hacked and then decided to be liquidated. More than a year has passed since then, but I still haven’t seen my cryptocurrencies.

But maybe I’ll see you in a year or two?

Conclusion: if I had already held crypto on the ledger back then, such stupid questions would not have arisen.

How to check the authenticity of the Ledger Nano crypto wallet

To ensure the safety of your digital coins from attackers who try to gain access to them by counterfeiting known cold storage devices, you should pay attention to the authenticity of the device you are purchasing.

  1. Buy only from the official store at shop.ledger.com or from authorized distributors. It is better to read reviews about dealers before purchasing.
  2. Pay attention to the contents of the box. Ledger Nano has standard equipment, which we wrote about above. If there are extra elements or something is missing, this is a reason for suspicion.
  3. Make sure the mnemonic phrase sheets are new and blank.
  4. Pay attention to the initial state of the device: when you first start there should be no password, a “Welcome” and a notification “Press both buttons to begin” .

The device never provides users with passwords. If you have been assigned a PIN code or there is already a PIN on the enabled wallet, further use of the storage is unsafe.

  1. Connect your wallet to the Ledger Live app. Only the original Ledger device can use its key to establish a connection with the secure Ledger server.

How do you lose bitcoins? Option three

A year ago I was in Barcelona. The city is beautiful, sunny - but not all locals like tourists there. The two guys on the subway were just like that. The guys worked in pairs, although they acted from different sides. One pretended to be drunk, approached me and, as if by chance, scattered change and keys in front of me. While he was picking them up, he turned his back to me and slammed his back into me quite hard.

The push was planned: it was at that moment that his partner pulled out my phone from the inside pocket of my denim jacket. Yes, it was unzipped, but he actually pulled it from the inside pocket.

Brave Spaniard with my phone

I noticed it was missing right away. Fortunately, I was not on my own - but the guys didn’t know that. So after thirty seconds of me panicking and tugging at the thief’s sleeve, they decided to return my iPhone. The second guy pretended to pick him up from the floor. The phone ended up in my hands, and the guys got off at the nearest stop.

When I picked up the phone, I couldn’t believe my eyes. But the fingerprint unlocked the iPhone, so it really was mine. There was no limit to the joy.

And then it got scary. But not only because of the possible prospect of unplanned purchase of a smartphone in another country. Still, the iPhone contains the excellent Google Authenticator application, which allows me to access cryptocurrency exchanges, services and other important platforms. Obviously, the password backup codes are written down somewhere, but what if I ended up being unable to regain access to the exchange? Then I would have been faced with a repeat of the Cryptopia scenario.

No thanks. I don't want to anymore.

Conclusion: Ledger would have helped here too. There, an Authenticator is not needed to log in - a regular password is enough.

Similar wallets

In addition to Ledger hardware wallets, cryptocurrency can also be stored in electronic wallets, which differ in functionality and list of supported coins. Below are examples of electronic crypto wallets that differ from Ledger products.

MetaMask

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet that works as an extension for Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Brave browsers and a mobile application for iOS and Android. The wallet was created in 2016 in the USA. MetaMask only allows you to store and transfer coins that exist on the Ethereum blockchain network: ETH, ERC20 tokens and ERC721 collectibles. Using MetaMask, you can register in Decentraland, a metaverse built on the Ethereum blockchain. The company has its own store where you can purchase products with brand symbols.

MyEtherWallet

MyEtherWallet or MEW is a wallet for securely storing coins running on the Ethereum blockchain, which appeared in 2015. In addition to the wallet, the developers also created an educational portal, MEWtopia, that teaches users how to interact with the blockchain. MyEtherWallet is presented as the MEW Wallet mobile application and MEW CX browser extension. MEW Wallet is an updated version of the MEW Connect mobile application with the ability to access the Ethereum blockchain. It works on the principle of a hardware wallet and allows you to store, buy and send cryptocurrency.
