Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 review: characteristics and overclocking

Is it worth mining in 2022?

A week of mining on a video card will not allow you to immediately buy a Lamborghini along with a yacht, but it will bring you some money. At a minimum, you will be able to save money for a new card and double your income. And there it’s not far from a full-fledged farm with eight GPUs.

The cryptocurrency market is growing steadily, and you need to take advantage of it. For example, on January 1, one Ethereum coin was offered at $134, but today the rate is $274. So even a banal purchase of cryptocurrency at the right time would allow you to get double profits and make good money.

In general, yes, mining at current rates is definitely useful and profitable. The 2Bitcoin resource will help you learn more about mining and cryptocurrencies, and for tips on setting up and overclocking video cards, go to this Telegram chat.

Profitability of mining on GTX 1070

The same procedure was carried out with other video cards. For the GTX 1070, 2CryptoCalc suggested mining Aeternity - that day the cryptocurrency brought in $1.5 and was in first place in terms of profitability.

The exchange rate on the day the experiment began was $0.4701 per Aeternity coin.

Then we went to record the projected income. For a week, the calculator promised 21.2571 AE or 10 dollars of profitability.

Finally, we started mining on 2Miners for a week. A summary of your computer's performance with the GTX 1070 can be found on this page.

In seven days, the video card earned 16.74683 AE or $7.68. This is 22 percent lower than expected profit, and the reason is also the difficulty of mining. The indicator increased from 906.9 K to 1.49 M, that is, it jumped 1.65 times. In addition, the exchange rate dropped from $0.4701 to $0.4590. It is not surprising that the profitability differs from the forecast.

Let's deal with electricity. A system unit with a GTX 1070 consumes 270 W per hour, that is, 45.36 kW per week of experimentation. For the light you will have to pay 181.44 rubles or 2.86 dollars.

Total: we have 4.82 dollars of net profit per week of Aeternity mining (7.68-2.86). So the GTX 1070 will earn $231 per year. And if the course increases or the difficulty decreases, there will be even more.

Selecting a power supply for a computer based on parameters

Power calculated. Let's move on to the following priority properties of power supplies:

  1. Standard size;
  2. Manufacturer;
  3. Degree of silence;
  4. Distribution of currents along lines;
  5. Availability of necessary protections;
  6. Modularity;
  7. Variety of power connectors.

Form factor

The power supply is installed in the case of a personal computer. There are two main standards depending on the size - ATX

and
SFX
. The first is used in conventional system units and is more common. If you have a compact desktop system, then only Small Form Factor will do. The instructions for the PC frame indicate the type of supported power supplies.

ATX format

involves installing a cooler with a diameter of up to 14 cm in the power supply. Previously, the
SFX
had an 80 mm fan. Nowadays, a compact power supply for a computer is equipped with a 12-centimeter cooler, which has a positive effect on noise levels.

Manufacturers of power supplies for computers

Each company can release both a successful series and a lackluster one. There are power supplies from different manufacturers on the market, but the filling is from the same company.

Of the fully branded power supplies, only Super Flower

, prices for which are steep. Their quality is excessive. Such power supplies are useful in hot server systems with round-the-clock load or mining.

At Seasonic

Noisy specimens also began to be found with squeaking, although it occupies a proud second place.

Enermax

began to outsource the production of new brands to
TWT
, which made them of lower quality.

Be quiet!

the cooling systems are better, and the real manufacturer of the power supply is HEC, which does not reach the “average” market.

Chieftec models

, the quality factor of which has fallen recently, but the cost has remained at the same level.

PSU Aerocool

The VX series are noisy at maximum power and mediocre in quality, while
the KCAS
are quiet, and shortcomings can be detected immediately and returned to the store.

Corsair company

is inconsistent - the CX series is the worst, and the RM is the best, although expensive.

XFX

- decent power supplies in terms of price/quality ratio, since they are quiet, and
Seasonic
. Such power supplies are cheaper, since they are not assembled at the main plant of the famous brand.

Power supplies differ in the quality of energy transfer from the outlet to the computer, that is, in the degree of loss. To formalize these parameters, an 80 PLUS certificate was issued, which is issued to a power supply with an energy efficiency of at least 80% and a power factor of at least 0.9.

This parameter directly determines how much you will spend on electricity. The noise level from the power supply will be less with a more advanced certificate, since the fan dissipates little heat. The higher the efficiency of the power supply, the more expensive it is. Therefore, we choose the “golden mean” – 80 PLUS GOLD. In this case, with a network voltage of 230 Volts, power losses at 50% load will be only 8%, while 92% will go to the needs of the PC.

Power Factor Correction

Quality power supplies always have power factor correction (PFC). This coefficient reduces the reactive power consumed by the power supply unit, which consists of inductive and capacitive components. Such power does not carry a payload, so they fight it by adding special elements to the circuit.

There are two types of PFC:

  1. Active;
  2. Passive.

APFC copes with short-term voltage dips in the electrical network (work continues due to the accumulated energy in the capacitors), so the voltage range at the input of such a power supply reaches 100-240 V. The resulting power factor rises to 0.95 at full load.

The passive PFC circuit is a high-inductance choke that smooths out low-frequency noise. But the power factor does not rise above 0.75.

Power supplies with active PFC are preferable, which improves their performance.

PSUs for computers also differ in the type of cooling:

  1. Active;
  2. Passive;
  3. Semi-passive.

The first type has become widespread. In such devices, the fan constantly rotates, removing warm air. Its speed can be controlled by the temperature inside the power supply case. The noise level depends on the size of the cooler (the larger the diameter, the lower the noise) and the type of its bearings (the quietest is hydrodynamic, the loudest is a plain bearing when worn).

A passive cooling system implies the presence of a massive radiator. The absence of a fan in the power supply does not mean complete silence during operation. Some elements of the unit's board may produce a quiet but noticeable hum. In terms of acoustic comfort, such models are often inferior to power supplies with active cooling.

The best choice for this criterion is power supplies with a semi-passive mode, especially if there is a button to control it.

The cooler turns on only when the system load is light (from 10 to 30% depending on the model). It then turns off when the temperature inside the power supply drops below a threshold value.

The advantage of semi-passive cooling is not only low noise, but also increased fan life due to reduced fan speed, as well as optimized heat dissipation at any time the power supply is running.

A high-quality power supply creates independent +3.3 V circuits; +5 V and +12 V. In budget power supplies, with a sharp increase in current consumption by the processor or video card along the +12 V circuit, drawdowns are observed on other lines. This may cause the system to freeze. Therefore, before purchasing, you need to find reviews on the Internet for the models you are interested in and give preference to a device whose voltage fluctuations do not exceed 3%.

The main load in the system unit falls on the CPU and video adapter, which receive energy via the +12 V line. Therefore, it is important that the power supply is able to deliver the maximum possible power through it, preferably close to the total. Such information is displayed on the power supply label.

Protection technologies

The next stage is that the power supply has various protections against:

  • overload (OPP);
  • overcurrent (OCP);
  • overvoltage (OVP);
  • undervoltage (UVP);
  • overheating (OTP);
  • short circuit (SCP).

Modularity

There are three types of power supply according to the method of connecting power cables:

  1. Non-modular;
  2. Fully modular;
  3. With partially detachable cables.

The first type is the cheapest. Such a power supply requires careful laying of the wires in the personal computer case so as not to interfere with the free movement of air. A system unit with good cable management will do.

The power supply is easier to install if only the necessary cables are connected to it. In this case, such stringent requirements are not imposed on the body.

Power cables for the motherboard and central processor are required regardless of the number of connected devices, so you can choose the least expensive power supplies with partially detachable connectors.

Computer power supply connectors

The power supply supplies power to the components of the personal computer through cables with connectors. For hard drives and optical drives, SATA and outdated Molex types are used. But the second option is used to operate case fans if their rotation speed is not regulated. Solid-state drives are powered either via SATA or directly via the PCI and M.2 interfaces of the motherboard. A floppy drive requires a Floppy connector.

The main power cables are supplied to the motherboard (24/20 pin) and CPU (8/4 pin). The 20-pin connector was used with early motherboards, now it is 24 pin, in which 4 pins are usually unfastened. For undemanding “stones”, 4-pin power is enough, but it is better to connect all 8 wires.

If the external video adapter does not have enough power on the PCI bus, then additional connectors with power are connected. Computer power supply connectors for a video card can be 6 or 8-pin, and for powerful devices - two 8-wire connectors.

The length of the supplied cables is also important. Before purchasing, go to the website of the power supply manufacturer and study the parameters of interest.

Without competent research into the market of PC power supplies, it is impossible to build an effective and stable system. The durability of the components directly depends on the properties of the power supply. Which power supply is best for a computer? An ideal purchase is considered to be a device from a well-known brand that operates at 50–80% of its capabilities (affects the strength of its elements and the degree of noise) with all existing protections.

About video card drivers

It is recommended to immediately install drivers for the video card from the website of the official graphics chip manufacturer: NVidia for GeForce or AMD for Radeon. If for some reason you cannot do this, you can first install the video card drivers from the disk that comes with it, and only then update it from the official website. Important: do not leave the drivers that the operating system itself installs; they are intended only so that you can see the desktop and be able to use the computer and do not use all the functions of your graphics adapter.

Installing the latest drivers for your video card is one of the most useful things (compared to updating any other drivers) to improve performance and get rid of problems in games.

How much does GTX 1060 3 GB bring?

Let's start with the most affordable model - GeForce GTX 1060 from Nvidia. In our version, the video card has 3 GB of memory, which is not enough to mine some popular coins today. For example, GTX 1060 3 GB will not be able to mine Aeternity, Grin and Zcoin.

2CryptoCalc will select the most profitable cryptocurrency for mining available. The principle of working with the profitability calculator is simple. We indicate the hashrate - that is, the performance - of the video card for each algorithm, press the calculation button and get income. By the way, soon 2CryptoCalc will know the hashrates of different video card models by heart, so you will only need to indicate the number of GPUs and the mining algorithm.

Here's what the calculator recommended for the GTX 1060 3GB.

We trusted 2CryptoCalc and chose Bitcoin Gold. The exchange rate of the coin was immediately recorded: on the day the experiment began, it was $26.3.

The most pleasant moment has come - the forecast of possible income. Let us immediately note that the mining calculator cannot look into the future, but predicts profitability based on the results at the time of calculation. So if the numbers don’t add up, there’s nothing criminal about it.

2CryptoCalc shows $4.31 in revenue per week of Bitcoin Gold mining. In the same screenshot, we remember another indicator - the difficulty of mining. It shows how difficult it is for the video card to solve the network problem, find the block and get the reward. The higher the difficulty, the lower the card's income. On the day the experiment started, the difficulty of the Bitcoin Gold network was 196.54 K.

The next step is to connect your computer to the 2Miners pool and mine for one week. 2Miners remembers the results of each participant and displays them in the public domain. Follow the link to see detailed statistics of our GTX 1060 3 GB.

The video card earned 0.13551 BTG. By the way, on the last day of the experiment, the Bitcoin Gold rate was $26.66 per coin, so the income was $3.61. This is noticeably less than 0.1635 BTG, which the calculator promised before the start of the test. Why is that?

It's all about the complexity of the network. On the first day of the experiment, it was 196.54 K, and on the last - 245.09 K. This means that miners of other coins joined the network, and due to the increase in power, the profit pie had to be divided among a large number of people. That's why our income has decreased.

Where there are incomes, there must be expenses. In the case of mining on a gaming computer, the money will be actively consumed by the video card. Our computer with a GTX 1060 3 GB consumes 160 watts per hour or 26.88 kW for a week of experiment. With an average tariff of 4 rubles per kW, we will need to pay 107.52 rubles for electricity, which translates into $1.69.

Total: we have 1.92 dollars of net profit per week of Bitcoin Gold mining (3.61-1.69). This translates to $7.68 per week or $92 per year. This money is almost enough for a used video card of the same model, so in essence the card is paying off its purchase. By the way, experienced miners know how to reduce consumption through fine-tuning. As a result, savings amount to 20-30 percent.

How much does GTX 1080 ti bring?

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 ti is the most fun. The former flagship has 11 GB of memory, so you can mine everything on it. The profitability calculator recommended digging Grin using the Cuckatoo-31 algorithm. For the latter you need at least 11 GB, so the GTX 1060 3 GB and 1070 would not be able to mine here.

The Grin rate at the beginning of the experiment was $4.82.

After fixing the rate, we also wrote down the projected profit. 2CryptoCalc recommended counting on 3.4136 Grin or a little more than $15 per week. In this screenshot we also remember the difficulty of mining at the beginning of the experiment - it was equal to 2.92 G.

During the week on the 2Miners pool, the 1080ti video card brought 2.47248 Grin or 10.4 dollars. This is almost 1 coin less than the calculator predicted. What is the reason for this drawdown?

Firstly, the difficulty of mining played a cruel joke again: it increased from 2.92 G to 3.88 G. Secondly, the Grin rate dropped noticeably. On the last day of the experiment, the price per coin was $4.21, that is, 12 percent less.

The GTX 1080 ti consumes the most - as much as 300 W per hour or 50.4 kW over a week of experiment. The latter will cost us 201.6 rubles in expenses or 3.17 dollars.

Total: we have 7.23 dollars of net profit for the week of Grin mining (10.40-3.17). This translates into a profit of $347 per year, which is enough to buy the most expensive version of AirPods. And there will still be 5 thousand rubles left.

Water cooling for GTX 1060 graphics card

Water cooling is required when using the GTX 1060 6GB for mining. This will reduce the load on the system and extend its service life. The advantages of such cooling include:

  1. Improving system performance;
  2. Possibility of cooling several devices simultaneously;
  3. Compact dimensions;

Minuses:

  • Difficult to install and configure correctly;
  • A specially prepared liquid is used as water, which costs money. Tap water will not work;
  • There may be a leak, which will lead to a short circuit in the system;
  • High price;
