One of the miners, who called himself Ben, told the publication how local industry participants work underground. He has been mining since 2015 and has 6,000 devices.
After the government crackdown began, Ben distributed the equipment across multiple sites so as not to stand out on the network with too much power consumption.
He installed 1,000 units throughout the country, wherever he could obtain capacity. This equipment is powered from the state power grid. 5,000 miners are connected directly to two small hydroelectric power plants in Sichuan province.
Ben also takes steps to hide his geographic digital footprint.
He said he was used to taking "workarounds" when doing business in China, but in the last six months "the stakes have really increased."
“We never know how harsh measures the government will take to destroy us,” the miner noted.
The precautions did not help him evade detection by the authorities. Ben explained that mining is monitored by suspicious traffic by one of the largest telecommunications companies, China Telecom. It transmits information about possible violations to the central government, from where it is forwarded to the municipal levels.
