AMD began selling the Radeon Pro WX 7100 on November 10, 2016 at a suggested price of $799. This is a graphics card for workstations, based on GCN 4.0 architecture, with a 14 nm process technology. It has 8 GB of GDDR5 memory with a frequency of 1750 MHz, a 256-bit bus, which provides a bandwidth of 7 Gbit/s.

The card occupies 1 slot and is connected via PCIe 3.0 x16 interface. The length of the reference version is 241 mm, width 112 mm. The card requires the connection of one 6-pin additional power cable, the stated maximum power consumption is 130 W.

The long-awaited AMD Radeon Vega, which no one is waiting for

On July 31, 2022, AMD finally presented gaming versions of its top line of Vega video cards, which, by the way, were expected at the end of 2016.
Then we waited until March 2022, when the RX5xx line came out, then everyone waited for June, and finally, after almost a year of waiting, we can get these treasured video cards into our apartments, hot from summer mining. We recently published news about the mining performance of the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition and, to put it mildly, the results did not make us very happy. At the time of writing, it was not known how this card would perform in mining ETH and ZCash. Today we can say that VEGA at a price of 500 USD, with a power consumption of 300W and a hashrate of 35Mh/s on ETH is simply terrible, there is only one hope for Zcash, where the predecessor Radeon Fury showed itself to be much better. In principle, only one TDP value of 300W should scare away all miners from this model, and given that the results in mining gaming cards will not differ much from the results of the first version for developers, you can now cross this video card off your wish list and purchase preferences any miner.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and perhaps AMD will still surprise us with the Vega’s performance on popular mining algorithms, and this card will become a worthy competitor to the GTX1070 at a price even with twice the power consumption.

In the consumer segment, AMD has released 3 modifications of the VEGA card:

  • Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition : 64 CUs and 4096 stream processors; core frequency 1406 MHz with Boost mode up to 1677 MHz; 8 GB HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 484 GB/s; liquid cooling; TDP - 345 W; price - $699.
  • Radeon RX Vega 64 : 64 CUs and 4096 stream processors; core frequency 1247 MHz with Boost mode up to 1546 MHz; 8 GB HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 484 GB/s; air cooling; TDP - 295 W; price - $499.
  • Radeon RX Vega 56 : 56 CUs and 3584 stream processors; core frequency 1156 MHz with Boost mode up to 1471 MHz; 8 GB HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 410 GB/s; air cooling; TDP - 210 W; price - $399.

In the professional segment, 2 cards were released (prices are not known):

  • AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 : 64 CUs and 4096 stream processors; core frequency 1500 MHz with Boost mode up to 1890 MHz; 16 GB HBM2 memory with 484 GB/s bandwidth
  • Radeon Pro SSG : 64 CUs and 4096 stream processors; core frequency 1500 MHz with Boost mode up to 1890 MHz; 16 GB HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 484 GB/s + 2Tb Flash memory.

Video card manufacturers did not keep themselves waiting and on the same day presented their lines of video cards based on the AMD RADEON VEGA chip, in particular, ASUS presented 5 models of video cards both with a reference design, as well as with a proprietary air cooling system in the STRIX line.

Sales will begin on August 14 and gamers can breathe a sigh of relief because... They are unlikely to see a huge queue of miners buying hundreds of these video cards.

Along with the purchase of the Vega video card, Amd announced a discount promotion, i.e. by purchasing a video card you will receive a $200 discount on a monitor or a $100 discount on a motherboard with a Ryzen processor and two games (Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Prey)

There is a suspicion that the prices for Vega set at the start of sales will quickly decline, because... The bonus program is aimed specifically at gamers, and miners do not need 20 monitors with a 200 bucks discount, due to which the higher price will immediately discourage those who like to dig for cryptocurrency. If in the near future the Radeon RX Vega 56 can be purchased for 300USD, and not 400, then this will already be an interesting offer. I often ask the question: is it worth mining on professional video cards? Will Tesla or Quadro, Radeon PRO produce better results than regular consumer graphics cards?
