Chinese miners criticized the reliability of Antminer 17

Antminer T17 is a new generation miner from Bitmain with an improved design and improved parameters. It works on the SHA-256 algorithm, which makes it universal and suitable for mining various cryptocurrencies, however, first of all, it is “tailored” for the mining of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

Its main feature is the ideal productivity-price ratio. It costs less than other devices in the manufacturer’s new line, but has an impressive hashrate of 40 TH/s and improved energy efficiency, which has a positive effect on earnings from its use.

Review of ASIC design features

Antminer T17 has the following design features:

  • Its “filling” is 90 new generation BM1397 chips produced by TSMC, located on 3 boards. They provide high power and energy efficiency of the device.
  • Built-in Bitmain APW9 power supply, which made the ASIC more compact and avoided connecting wires with connectors.
  • Improved cooling technology. For dissipation, 4 powerful coolers and a two-pipe heat dissipation system are used. The developers have reduced the distance between the air inlet and outlet by half, which led to more efficient and much faster cooling of the ASIC. In turn, this had a positive effect on the stability of the miner, reduced the cost of its maintenance and extended its service life.
  • The case has a dustproof design with high protection against dust and dirt getting inside the device, which in turn extends its service life and reduces the likelihood of breakdown.
  • Due to the improved design, Antminer T17, compared to previous models, has become more stable, heats up less, and its productivity and energy efficiency have increased.

Characteristics and advantages of ASIC Antminer T17

The Bitmain brand traditionally offers customers several lines of ASICs with different letters in the name. The T series can be considered an economy option: the devices related to it are less productive compared to the top-end S family, but at the same time they are noticeably cheaper. The Antminer T17 model itself was released to the market in 2022. and still remains relevant.

This is largely achieved through the use of 7-nanometer BM1397 processors, which provide good performance combined with high energy efficiency. The manufacturer also installed 4 fans at once, and placed massive radiators on the internal boards, thanks to which the ASIC is guaranteed not to overheat.

This is important: It is necessary to take into account that the model is quite noisy - this is a common drawback of all ASICs, due to which they are best placed in non-residential premises. The device is massive and weighs about 11 kilograms - this fact also affects the choice of installation location.

Inside the case there are 3 boards on which 144 chips are soldered that perform calculations. The model comes with a proprietary power supply and control board; no additional equipment is required. To get started, just connect the ASIC to the network and the Internet.

You can mine currencies using the SHA-256 algorithm on the device, in particular the famous Bitcoin. At the same time, this ASIC is not adapted for mining Ethereum and other altcoins that use other algorithms. Thanks to a reasonable ratio of price and quality, the purchase costs can be quickly “recaptured”, after which you can start working in profit.

Specifications

The following can be said about the technical characteristics of the miner:

  • The operating algorithm is SHA-256.
  • Hash rate - 40 TH/s.
  • Availability of operating modes - 2. Has a standard operating mode and an energy saving mode.
  • Power consumption - 2522 W in standard mode and 2200 W in economy mode.

  • Operating temperature: from 5 to 35 °C.
  • The dimensions of the device are 29.82 x 17.8 x 29.6 cm.

In terms of its characteristics and cost, Antminer T17 is considered to be “average” among similar devices for mining cryptocurrencies. It is quite budget-friendly, but at the same time has good performance and brings quite a decent income. In addition, it is reliable, stable in operation, easy to connect and configure, well protected from overheating and dust, compact, consumes little electricity, and can be used to assemble a mining farm. It is for these qualities that many miners love him.

You can distinguish new products from previous Bitmain models only by the sticker.

We recently published a review of the Bitmain Antminer S17e and T17e bitcoin miners, which have a good profitability rate and, most importantly, a price tag.

Chinese miners criticized the reliability of Antminer 17

ASIC miner manufacturer Bitmain has come under criticism for some products in the Antminer 17 line, 8btc reports. Chinese users are complaining about high device failure rates.

Models T17 and S17+ ]introduced[/anchor] last year. The new flagships sold well on the wave of success of the previous S7 and S9 series. Miners expected higher reliability and profitability from devices compared to previous generations.

But after the inclusion of new ASICs in the network, there was a growing wave of customer complaints specifically about the reliability of the equipment. The failure rate of Antminer T17 and S17+ devices reaches 30%, miners claim.

They name the main reasons why ASICs fail:

  • short circuit on the hash board due to a loose/dislodged heatsink;
  • cooling fan failure.

One of the miners, who gave his name as Lin, clarified for the publication that out of 600 T17e units, he is forced to send more than a dozen to Bitmain for repairs approximately every 5 days. He found that 60% of failed ASICs had misaligned or weakened heatsinks on their hash boards.

In specialized groups on WeChat, miners discussing problems with equipment came to the conclusion that they were caused by its quality, and not by maintenance or improper operation. Other ASICs, including Avalon 1066, WhatsMiner M21S, operating under the same conditions on the same farm, do not have the same failure rate, Lin noted.

Bitmain responded to the criticism. In the official WeChat account, the company wrote that it is paying close attention to the quality problems of Antminer 17 products. Bitmain expressed its willingness to compensate users for losses caused by hardware failure, and stated that it is considering other solutions, including replacing devices with new ones, free on-site repairs, etc. .d.

The company's co-founder and CEO Jihan Wu blamed previously removed CEO Mikri Zhang for problems with the reliability of the s17. According to him, after the success of S9, further development was led by Zhang along with his personal assistant.

“Being self-centered, he set the wrong direction in research and development, which led to market complaints against Bitmain such as high crash rates and poor stability, especially the T series,” Jihan Wu said.

He promised that the stability and after-sales service of the s19 ASICs will improve significantly. The specifications of the new flagships were ]revealed[/anchor] at the end of February, and sales started a month later.

Let us remind you that almost simultaneously with the start of sales of AntMiner S19, MicroBT presented updated flagship ASIC miners. According to the manufacturer, 50% of the increase in Bitcoin hashrate last year was provided by its WhatsMiner M20 devices.

Payback Antminer S17+

You can calculate the approximate return period for your invested money using the WhatToMine online calculator. Open the Miners tab and find antminer s17+ 73th in the list of supported devices. In principle, this will not be difficult, because this ASIC takes first place. With the cost of an outlet being 0.06$/kWh, its current profit is 8.28$ per day.

The official distributor of Bitmain Antminer Russia offers this device at a price of 125,000 rubles, which at an exchange rate of 63 rubles per dollar is $1,984. Using simple calculations we determine the payback period. In this situation, the miner will pay for itself in approximately 240 days.

Of course, this figure is not final. The actual return on investment depends on the situation on the virtual asset market and the cost of electricity in your region.

In addition, in the middle of this year, another halving will occur in the Bitcoin network, which means that the reward for a signed block will be halved. How this event will affect the cost of the main coin for mining on s17 is still unclear. For example, last year’s halving on the Litecoin network did not in any way contribute to the rise in the rate of this cryptocurrency.

Comparison of S17+ with competitors

Let's see how the new ASIC is ahead of its closest rival Canaan Avalon, as well as the previous Bitmain model.

ModelAntminer s17+Antminer s17Canaan Avalon 1166
Hashrate TH/s735968
W consumption292023853196
Efficiency j/Mh4040.547

The new modification of the miner from Bitmain is slightly ahead of its predecessor in terms of energy efficiency, and thanks to its higher hashrate, it brings in more crypto coins.

ASIC miners from other manufacturers are still seriously behind in all respects. For comparison, we took one of the most productive devices from Bitmain's competitors. Other mining machines running on SHA256 consume even more energy per unit of hashrate.
