Antminer S9
In 2016, Chinese mining equipment manufacturer Bitmain released the Antminer S9 ASIC miner. The model is the successor to the Antminer S7, which was considered the best miner of its time. The updated version is aimed at mining cryptocurrencies using the SHA-256 algorithm, the most famous of which is Bitcoin along with its forks Bitcoin Cash, Emercoin, Peercoin, Namecoin, Steemit and others.
The community immediately appreciated the capabilities of the new model in terms of efficiency and profitability. The equipment has become so popular that the demand for Antminer S9 continues to this day. This was the first ASIC miner based on a 16nm chip, which at that time was already considered a huge breakthrough. But this is just one of the features that will be discussed in the review below.

Technical characteristics of Antminer S9
The ASIC miner Antminer S9 case is made of aluminum. This solution is a distinctive feature of all cryptocurrency mining devices produced under odd numbers by BITMAIN. According to the developers, this material is most suitable for making a case, as it allows for additional heat dissipation.
Specialized sleds are attached to the side of the case, allowing you to combine several miners into a horizontal stack. As before, hashing boards can be freely inserted into special slots in the housing without being additionally fixed.
First look
I received one of the first miners of the first batch with serial number 0003. This is nice, but the first devices in the series often suffer from childhood diseases, which I had to learn from my own experience.
Antminer S9 is confusingly similar to its predecessor in appearance and layout. The layout of the control and hashing boards is somewhat different, but otherwise, without seeing the “ANTMINER S9” sticker, it can easily be confused with the previous model. The stylish aluminum case of the traditional odd-series form factor for “ants” turned out to be so successful that they decided not to remake it. In addition, unlike a plastic one, the aluminum case works as an additional heat sink. On the sides of the case there are still slides for mounting a certain number of miners in a horizontal stack. The hashing boards are also freely inserted into the slots of the case, without rigid fastening.
But, despite the external resemblance to the “oldies,” the most modern mining chips with a total power of 14 terahash per second were hidden inside my ASIC. Just a year ago, to obtain these 14 terahashes, you needed a whole rack of ASICs and 7-8 kW “from the socket,” which is extremely difficult to organize at home.
But here the first trouble awaited me. While turning the miner in my hands, I heard the distinct rattling of some foreign object inside. Not risking running the ASIC in this condition, I was forced to break the warranty seal and remove the hashing boards.
As it turned out, the heatsink had peeled off from one of the chips and was walking freely inside the case. I had to use hot glue and postpone acquaintance with the pinnacle of mining thought until the next day.
Main features and capabilities of the S9 model
S9 was conceived and implemented by Bitmain specialists as an energy-efficient tool for mining cryptocurrencies that operate using SHA-256. The most popular of them are BTC (bitcoin) and BCH (bitcoin cash). The ASIC case is made of aluminum and looks like an elongated rectangle with coolers located on the front and rear panels. This design solution provides excellent ventilation of internal working units: excess heat is removed by air flow using a minimum number of fans.
The top of the Antminer S9 serves as a platform for the Ethernet network controller, an SD card slot and two LED indicators. The internal content of the device consists of three parallel processor boards, each of which is connected to VM-1387 chips. Excess heat is removed through radiators installed next to the boards.
The main advantages of the S9 miner are excellent technical parameters and quality of components with compact dimensions and light weight. Thus, with an electricity consumption level of 1300 W, the system produces 13.5 +/- 5% HP, which is much higher compared to previous versions. The working base consists of 16-RM chips, which help increase the speed when calculating hash algorithms. A total of 189 chips, spread across three boards, combine to achieve a fantastic hashrate of 13.5 TeraHash per second, a result that would have been hard to believe just recently.
Meanwhile, the miniaturization of semiconductors in order to increase energy efficiency and computing power, within the framework of the technology used today, has almost reached its limit. Moore's law no longer applies because the growth in the speed of information transmission has slowed down, approaching the physical limit.
The 16nm manufacturing process used in the S9 is the most efficient upgrade from 28nm. And although 10nm chips are already on the way, the subsequent increase exceeds the boundaries of realistically possible values.
Briefly about the advantages of ASIC S9:
- better energy efficiency;
- high performance with small device sizes;
- full cooling;
- absolute autonomy of work;
- the ability to easily and quickly configure Antminer S9;
- unpretentiousness to external conditions;
- availability of Linux;
- the ability to fully update the Antminer S9 firmware in accordance with the usual official update procedures;
- highly efficient Bitmain power supply;
- Possibility of combining into a common farm.
Among the disadvantages of ASIC S9, it is worth highlighting increased noise. Initially, the device was developed for industrial use, so its authors did not take care of reducing fan noise. It is best to install the S9 in a separate room with a tightly closed door or replace the fans.
The device also has poor compatibility with most mining pools, with exceptions including Antpool and F2 Pool. Another disadvantage is the lack of a power supply included in the package (add another $170-$200 to the cost).
Is S9 profitable?
Judging by the above results, as well as numerous reviews, Antminer S9 is definitely beneficial. But still, as large miners switch to more advanced hardware technologies, the difficulty of mining BTC and BCH can quickly increase, and this will inevitably reduce profitability. Overall, the S9 is an excellent mining tool, although it is still quite expensive. It is likely that it will remain profitable longer compared to previous generations of ASICs, although given the unpredictability of BTC mining, this statement cannot be considered 100% correct.
As competing companies actively release other mining devices, the S9's price is expected to drop significantly in the coming months. However, even despite Bi Wang's promises to launch a line of BitFury architectural equipment with a fantastic energy efficiency of 0.06 J/GHz, most experts agree that nothing technologically superior to the S9 will appear on the market in the near future.
Pros and cons of Antminer S9
If we talk about the advantages of the S9, then first of all it is worth highlighting the following points:
- Still relevant for 2022 (even despite the greatly increased difficulty of Bitcoin mining + a huge drop in the cryptocurrency rate).
- Decent power, taking into account the ratio of hashrate, power consumption and cost of the device.
- Bitcoin mining - the SHA-256 algorithm is still considered the most promising and profitable due to the status and weight of Bitcoin.
- The cost of ASIC has dropped significantly compared to 2022 and 2018, so the device can be found at a bargain price.
There are also disadvantages of the device, although most of them can be considered conditional. They mainly concern the obvious features of many ASICs, which have retained their relevance by 2020. This concerns high power consumption and noise.
However, if you are not going to keep the S9 in living rooms, having allocated a special room for this (as is customary to do in most cases), noise can be called a conditional drawback. Moreover, at the moment, only a few models on the market can boast of moderate operating noise, so this minus applies to all ASICs rather than specifically to the S9.
Another disadvantage is the need to use an additional power supply. The installed power supply often overheats, especially when working on exchange pools (for example, NiceHash). Any server power supply will be suitable for these purposes.
It is also worth considering that when starting an ASIC (especially if it was bought secondhand, which is usually not recommended), you need to check:
- Power – the indicator should not be lower than 13.5 TH/s.
- No chip errors (in the Asic Status window, errors will be displayed as “X” instead of “0”. All chips should show “0”).
- Fan speed – basically, this indicator depends on the overall temperature in the room, so you shouldn’t pay much attention to this point (only if the ASIC is in hot rooms, which is undesirable).
Payback period for Antminer S9
A Bitcoin farm is a complex of computer equipment that carries out calculations in the required mode.
No matter how attractive the characteristics of the S9 are, before you decide to buy, you definitely need to calculate the expected profit taking into account many factors, including the cost of the equipment itself, electricity, cryptocurrency rates, and the ever-increasing complexity of calculating the block algorithm.
The amount of income from mining will also depend on the pool of which S9 will become a member. Despite its high power, it is unlikely to pay for itself in solo mining, so the choice of pool can be critical.
The second important aspect is energy consumption. The consumption of the S9 miner is 0.1 J/gHash, which is approximately 2.5 times less compared to the S7. Power consumption is 1,300 W (300 W more than S7).
The pre-order cost of this model is 160 thousand rubles, the cost on Amazon is from $3,600.
To calculate the payback, you will need the following data:
- equipment cost – $2,500 – 3,600 and above;
- productivity – 14 t/s;
- current exchange rate;
- network complexity (for Bitcoin – 1,123.96 M, for Bitcoin Cash – 222.36 M).
You can make calculations using an online mining calculator. Based on the above data, VTS production with constant ASIC operation should give an income of up to $450, VSN production - up to $600. Of course, the calculations are correct provided that the initial data are stable.
Power and cooling systems
As soon as information about the characteristics of the device became known, many users became interested in how much the ASIC S9 consumes per hour at such performance. Many also had doubts about the quality of the cooling system, because with such power it is very difficult to ensure good ventilation. At the same time, if coolers can still cool the system, then don’t they emit a strong hum? Let's look at the answers to these questions now.
A standard power supply designed for ASIC Antminer S9, depending on the power of the device itself, can have a power consumption level from 1127 to 1372 Wh.
According to data posted on the official portal of the manufacturer, this value can change up or down by 10 percent, depending on the load level. It has an ordinary case, typical for server power supplies, and is also equipped with ten 6-pin connectors. This quantity is enough to connect one ASIC C9, based on the following calculation:
- 3 connectors for each hashing board;
- 1 connector for control board.
In addition, there are special contacts for monitoring and control buttons that are initially closed.
The standard unit copes well with its functions and produces a voltage slightly higher than 12 V. This indicator is quite enough for the device to operate at default frequencies. The power supply is approximately 93 percent efficient, reducing heat and unnecessary power consumption. It is important to consider that this indicator is maintained only if the room in which the ASIC is used has a constant temperature of no more than 25 degrees. The main disadvantage of the power supply is the loud noise during operation created by the cooling system. It is capable of drowning out even the hum emanating from the miner’s fans.
If you simultaneously run several power supplies for one S9 ASIC miner, then it is important to take into account that each hashing board must be connected to no more than one power supply. Otherwise, the equipment may be damaged and the cryptocurrency miner will only have to enjoy the appearance of the aluminum case.
As in the previous model, Antminer S9 uses 2 fans with a diameter of 120 millimeters for cooling, the maximum rotation speed of which is 6 thousand revolutions. When creating them, the company's engineers were primarily concerned about the quality of cooling of the boards, and not about the noise level, allowing the device to be used at home. When the cooling system operates at maximum speeds, you can hear a piercing whistle, which makes it extremely unpleasant to be near the miner.
In this regard, it is recommended to optimize the cooling system for operating the device in an apartment or house. The fact is that for normal cooling of the Antminer S9 at a temperature inside the operating room of up to 40 degrees Celsius, a speed of 4 thousand revolutions is quite enough. Based on this, you can replace the cooling fans with ones that are less powerful and have a lower noise level. The ideal choice for this is the Delta AFC1212DE, which has the same dimensions as the standard models, but is characterized by quieter operation.
Preparing and turning on Antminer S9 for the first time
Before turning on the ASIC Miner C9, the user must place it in the most suitable place so that nothing obstructs the air exit from the blower fan. Due to the relatively low level of power consumption of the device, there are no special requirements for connecting it to the network. If there is no power supply button, it is recommended to use a surge protector equipped with a switch.
It is also important to understand the controller board, which is housed in a semi-open aluminum case.
- Card reader for an SD card required for flashing the miner. This may be necessary if the equipment does not start from the built-in memory.
- Reset button to reset settings to default values. It can be used if the connection is configured incorrectly or the miner is unavailable on the network.
- Normal and Fault indicators indicating normal operation of the miner or problems. The first one glows green, the second one glows red.
- Ethernet connector for connecting the cord.
- IP Report button for using BITMAIN's IP Reporter utility.
After checking that all connectors are connected correctly, the device can be turned on. During the first startup, the fans will run for a while at maximum speed. Thus, the system will independently clean itself of dust accumulated during storage or transportation.
If the connection is correct, the fan speed will decrease after a while, and the indicator on the Internet connection connector will begin to blink green. If you use a DCHP server, searching and setting up a subnet for the miner will be done quickly and without much effort.
To obtain information about the address assigned to the device, you need to visit the router's web interface and check the list of DHCP clients. To do this, the user can use a standard utility from BITMAIN called IP Reporter or use one of the network scanning programs. When starting a proprietary utility, you must launch the software and click on the button labeled Start. At the same time, you must hold down the IP report button on the device for several seconds. After some time, the utility will detect the device and display its IP and MAC addresses.
After receiving the address, the user must enter it in the address bar of any Internet browser, after which it will automatically be moved to the web interface. To log in, he will need to enter his username and password. By default, both of these fields require the word root.
Externally, the Antminer S9 web interface has certain similarities with previous models from BITMAIN, but everything is even more simplified. There are no additional settings present in the S7 model. However, an experienced user will be able to perform all the necessary settings using an SSH connection.
In the first tab called System, it is important to pay attention to the special Upgrade tab, with which the user can update the system, save the current device configuration, or restore previously saved settings. If you need to make changes to network settings or set a static IP address, you need to go to the Network tab. However, experts strongly discourage making changes unless necessary, as they may lead to the device being unavailable in the web interface. The only way to solve this problem is to reset it to factory settings using the Reset button.
Installing ASIC Antminer S9
How to install and configure Antminer S9
So, the device has been purchased. What's next? And then it’s worth noting that the design is equipped with rather noisy fans, and this can be a problem when installing the Antminer S9 in a residential area. Therefore, it is better to choose a garage or basement for installation; most importantly, the working area should not be very dusty and with low humidity. The dust problem can be solved by installing special filters, but the main thing here is not to overdo it, so that new problems do not arise, for example, ASIC overheating.
There are many interesting solutions invented by miners themselves to solve problems associated with the production process of devices. But it is worth understanding that in some cases these may be additional costs that will reduce the overall profit from the miner.
As for installing the equipment, let's start with connecting the power. We connect the miner to the network and wait until the green light comes on. So, the Antminer S9 is noisy, the green light is on, which means you can proceed directly to the setup.
Preparing ASIC Antminer S9 for work
Setting up Antminer S9
The entire process of setting up the equipment will take just a few minutes.
First, we need to find out the miner's IP address. This can be done by downloading the program on the website bitmain.com in the “Support” section. We launch IP.Reporter, see the IP address and enter it in the browser. We go to the miner’s control panel and enter the default password “root”.

After this, we save the settings and see that ASIC Antminer S9 has switched to operating mode. From this moment the equipment begins to earn money.
To check information about the operation of the device, go to the “Miner Status” tab, which displays data on hashrate, mined blocks, pool settings and others.

Overclocking and firmware
When the ASIC is started, the equipment begins to operate in normal mode, meeting the indicators declared by the manufacturer. But over time, its productivity may decrease, which will subsequently negatively affect not only the work of the miner, but also the income from his work as a whole.
In order to make miners more efficient, official ASIC manufacturers and third-party developers have created solutions in the form of programs to improve the operation of the equipment. There are plenty of them on the Internet.
To download special software, go to the “System” / “Upgrade” tab, and install the update there.
Window for installing software for overclocking Antminer S9
The flashing process itself takes a few minutes, but in the end its owner will be able to get:
- Reducing noise levels by reconfiguring fans;
- Dust resistance, which increases the service life of the equipment and eliminates the need for regular cleaning;
- More efficient mining (increases power overclocking);
- Reduced energy consumption, thereby increasing profitability;
- Possibility of mining cryptocurrencies using a different algorithm, etc.
The last step to activate the installed software is to reboot the miner.
Before you start experimenting with Antminer S9, you need to check the power of the power supply, as there may be certain limitations:
- With a power of 1400 W, an increase of 0.5 TH/s is possible;
- With a power of 1600 W - up to 2 TH/s.
It is also necessary to remember that such software can not only improve the operation of the miner, but also, on the contrary, lead to its breakdown or failure of functionality.
☝️
Attention! If you use firmware from third-party suppliers, the ASIC manufacturer declines all responsibility for the consequences, so you need to be very careful when installing and overclocking the miner.
Although the same applies to those who want to install official software from the manufacturer. Thus, according to reports, it is not recommended to update the firmware from Bitmain until 2022, as it leads to the failure of some functions previously available for this model. And since the manufacturer’s warranty period is only 6 months, the user will most likely have to be left alone with their problems.
Overclocking Antminer S9
Setting up a device for mining
How does the first connection to antminer S9 occur?
- Install the miner so that there is nothing obstructing the cooling fans.
- Check for damage to the housing and any unusual sounds when turning over. Due to the cooling radiator peeling off, a short circuit is possible when turned on; this can be easily avoided by making a preliminary diagnosis.
- The power supply must be connected in series to each Pin connector. If you connect 2 power supplies at once to increase the power reserve during overclocking and achieve the maximum value of the antminer S9 th/s, check whether the connectors of both power supplies are connected to the connectors of one board.
The green Normal indicator blinking indicates that the antminer S9 connection was successful. If the red Fault signal turns on at startup, wait (2-5 minutes) until the device returns to normal mode.
Further configuration of antminer S9 begins with determining the network address. Connect the ASIC to the Internet and check the DHCP client lists in your router interface, or use the IP Reporter application.
- Install and launch the application and press the Start button on the display.
- Press and hold the IP report button on the antminer S9 control panel for 5-6 seconds.
- After the program determines the IP and MAC address of the device, enter the IP in the address bar of the browser and enter the username and password (root - root) to go to the miner interface.
- Open the GeneralConfiguration tab and enter the data of the selected pool in the antminer s9 settings.
If the connection is correct and the standard settings are saved, the miner will begin mining cryptocurrency automatically on the BITMAIN pool. In this case, the user’s first priority is to configure the ASIC S9 for the pool or register on the pool itself if these actions have not been performed by him previously. Miners from BITMAIN use a custom modification of the protocol called startum. In this regard, full-fledged cryptocurrency mining is possible only on Chinese pools such as F2pool and Antpool.
To create an account on bitmain antpool, you must:
- go to the registration page;
- enter your email, password and captcha;
- agree to the rules and click create an account;
- enter the phone number;
- we receive an SMS code;
- Confirm your account and log in to the pool.
You must create your own USER ID instead of "antminer". It is not necessary to change the miner's name and antminer s9 password in the worker section, they were created automatically. To stop mining if the temperature of the antminer S9 is close to the critical point, check the “Stoprunningwhentemperatureisover 80” box. This way you will avoid overheating of the device during the hot season. You can control the antminer S9 temperature and noise by adjusting the speed of the coolers. In the “AdvancedSettings” section you can adjust the clock frequency of the device chips. Using this option you can slow down or speed up mining of antminer S9. Do not exceed permissible frequency variation limits. The parameters for each batch are listed on the Bitmain website. After the start, in the “MinerStatus” section, you need to check the antminer S9 mining statistics. Don't expect the data to appear instantly, it takes some time. If there are no statistics for a long time, reboot the miner and contact support.
In order to change the mining pool on antminer S9, you must:
- stop mining by pressing reset;
- log into the ASIC configurator using the network address;
- replace the data of the first pool;
For example, to configure antminer s9 nicehash:
- In the URL field enter stratum+tcp://sha256.eu.nicehash.com
- Worker wallet address NiceHash
- Password x
Click “Save” and reboot. If the pool replacement fails, you need to flash antminer S9.
Also, as an example, consider the registration process on Antpool. It will not require much effort from the user, since the interface of the official portal has been partially translated into Russian. During the first login, you will need to create a personal account, which will later be used for cryptocurrency mining (in this regard, it is recommended to save it).
To subsequently configure the device for a specific account, nothing else is needed. After registering an account, you need to visit the Antminer S9 web interface and replace the word antminer with the name of the created account. In this case, the worker name specified after the underscore, as well as the password, do not need to be replaced, since the latter are generated automatically. It is recommended to leave the restriction regarding stopping the operation of the device when the temperature rises above 80 degrees. Despite the fact that the chips themselves can heat up to 100 degrees or more, experts do not recommend experimenting. The ideal operating temperature for chips should not exceed 80 degrees, and for boards - 50.
The user can also independently set the following parameters in Antminer S9:
- Fan speed. It is recommended to install provided that the room temperature does not change.
- Clock speed of the chips. It is recommended to set it at 600 MHz for weaker models and 650 MHz for models with a performance of 14 TH/s.
Connection and setup
Install the ASIC so that there is a gap between its rear fan and the wall, otherwise the device will be at risk of overheating. The device can be supplied either with or without a power supply. It is better to choose the option with it, since overclocking this ASIC is not very profitable, and the power supply from the manufacturer is of high quality, and you will not have problems because of it: its power of 1.6 kW is enough to power the S9, it provides a voltage of 12 V , and the efficiency is 93%.
The PSU also has a cooler, since the circuitry requires cooling, and this is the only drawback of the device. This cooler also creates quite a bit of noise, noticeable even compared to the noise from the S9. However, this defect is inherent only in earlier versions; in more recent versions the problem has been solved.
If there is only one ASIC, then the device can be easily connected to an outlet, but if you are installing a cluster, you will need a separate circuit with thick wires: for example, for five such ASICs you need 32A, which is twice as much as in a standard household outlet.
Electricity is supplied, the S9 turns on - and already in the first seconds of startup you can feel that this is a really powerful unit, judging by the hum of the fans. This noise immediately makes it clear that this ASIC has no place in a residential apartment. The noise can reach 75 dB, which will create uncomfortable conditions for living nearby. There are light indicators on the front panel of the device: green lights up normally, while red indicates an error. After switching on, the red light may light up for several minutes - this is a normal situation; after a minute or several, the state of S9 should return to normal.
When everything is ready, we find out the IP address, for which there is a special button on the control panel. After this, the IP, login and password are entered in the browser. The web interface is simple and clear, through it you can update the firmware, configure the connection, assign a permanent IP to the device, set the speed of the coolers, and so on. To start mining, you need to register in the pool. The stratum protocol is used, which narrows the choice: Antpool and F2pool will be available, in other cases failures are possible. The first one was created by the ASIC manufacturer itself, and we recommend it.
After mining starts, you should leave the device for a while. After about an hour, it will become clear how well it does its job. A deviation within 5% in any direction from the hashrate declared by the manufacturer will be considered normal.
If you do install an ASIC in your apartment, then at least you should allocate a separate room for it, but even then the fans will make a lot of noise. The problem can be solved by replacing them - its cost compared to the price of the device itself is small: server fans of the required power cost about 1000 rubles.
Moreover, 4000 rpm is enough - the original fans do not work efficiently, and a high-quality replacement, even at a lower number of revolutions, will also reduce the temperature of the S9. And most importantly, the noise will be significantly reduced. Moreover, if you buy something more expensive with well-designed aerodynamics of the blades, then it will even be possible to install the device in the living room.
Performance, by the way, directly depends on the temperature: it is desirable that the room is approximately 20 °C, then the board will warm up to 50 °C, and the chips will warm up to at most 80 °C, and performance will be maximum. If the temperature of the board and chips becomes 5° higher, performance will drop by 5% due to an increase in the number of errors - a little, but unpleasant. Well, it is categorically undesirable to allow an even greater increase in temperature, since it is fraught with failure of the ASIC.
Summing up the Antminer S9 model
We can safely say that the Bitmain Antminer S9 ASIC is still relevant by mid-2022. Of course, it no longer provides such a powerful profit, but its price has dropped at least three times (another decrease may happen after the release of the S11 model).
Taking into account the payback period, as well as the prospects of SHA-256 and the demand for Bitcoin, this ASIC can still be considered as a budget entry into cryptocurrency mining.
The second quarter of 2022 showed that hard forks, the fight against centralization and other factors have half turned some (even the newest) ASICs into “bricks”, the profit of which leaves much to be desired. This affected Bitcoin and S9 minimally, and even with a very low daily income, buying an ASIC is still promising, for now.
Payback of S9 for the summer of 2018
Bitcoin is currently experiencing its biggest drop in 2022, which is partly due to the hard fork in mid-May. Analysts firmly predict that this time is the most profitable period for the purchase of Bitcoin, which, according to forecasts, will begin to grow significantly by the beginning of July. Another powerful jump in the exchange rate is expected in the fall, by which time Bitmain will probably release the long-awaited S11 ASIC.
All this negatively affected the calculation of the S9's payback, if we evaluate it at the current exchange rate. With an average income of $6.3/day (excluding mining pool fees), your total monthly income will range from $180 to $190. With an average device cost of $1100-1250 (in new condition), the payback period is about 6 months. In the current conditions, this is quite promising, taking into account the fact that with an increase in the Bitcoin exchange rate in the second half of 2018, this period will be significantly reduced (up to 4 months).
For example, in the first quarter of 2022, S9 brought in $30 per day. By the beginning of April, this figure had dropped to $7.3/day. Of course, it is unlikely that profits in the second half of the year will increase to previous values given the increasing complexity of mining and other factors, but analysts fully admit that Antminer S9 can earn $10-10.5 per day.
