In this post, we will explain the possible reasons why your video card may not be recognized by the operating system, NiceHash Miner manners or others.
There are three levels of recognition.
- The first level of recognition is by the system,
- Second level of recognition - Windows ,
- Third level of recognition - NiceHash Miner or any other
If one recognition level fails, the next level will also fail to recognize the equipment.
There are also 3 possible stages of an error in successful recognition of a video card:
- The video card is not recognized by the system
- Video card is not recognized by Windows
- The video card is not recognized by NiceHash Miner or any other
We'll explain why some errors happen and how to resolve them below. Please note that this is a general troubleshooting guide, your problem may be completely different. Always think outside the box when solving problems. We invite you to join our Discord server, where other miners help each other.
Characteristics of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 video card and modifications
When considering the characteristics of any video card, including the Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, you need to pay attention to the following things:
- Her performance;
- Attached specifications;
- Compatibility and dimensions;
- Memory size;
- Technologies used in creation;
- Values of operating temperature and temperature at increased loads;
- System requirements declared by the manufacturer;
- Other features;
Each characteristic is key and affects system performance. Let's look at each point in more detail.
Performance
GTX has high performance, which has different values depending on the modification. For example:
- The GTX model with 6 gigabytes of memory is equipped with a full-fledged 1060 processor;
- The model with 3 gigabytes has a budget version of the processor, in which out of 10 data processing threads only 9 are active;
This difference makes little difference in performance when performing normal tasks, but under increased loads the difference becomes more noticeable. If we consider the performance indicators for a gaming PC, then the GTX with 3 gigabytes of memory will not hold up to modern AAA toys. The older version will handle them much more confidently.
Note! GTX, to achieve high performance parameters, takes advantage of Pascal technology, which allows you to increase the speed of the processor.

With its help, the user can create screenshots that will not be inferior in image quality to professional photographs.
- Shadow Works; This is not one technology, but a whole set. Their use gives the image even more realism, thanks to the work with shadows. Calculating the display of shadows depending on lighting, blurring shadows and smoothing are just a small list of its capabilities.
- DSR; Converts the image produced by the game in a higher resolution and optimizes it to suit the realities of your computer, without losing quality.
Operating and maximum temperature of the Nvidia GTX 1060 video card
The temperature of the Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 series video card is determined by 3 values:
- During idle time, its indicators are 38o;
- The normal temperature, which does not go beyond the permissible limits, is 75o;
- The maximum temperature, exceeding which threatens to destroy the video card, is 94°;
Note! These indicators are declared by the manufacturer and are reference values for determining the state of the graphics adapter.
To measure the temperature of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 video card, a huge number of auxiliary programs have been developed, which can be accessed via the Internet. Some of them are freely available, others are paid.
Official system requirements
Official system requirements apply only to the power supply. For correct operation of the GTX 1060, it is recommended to use a power supply with a power of at least 400W. This is quite enough for comfortable operation of the video card, without loss of power. The power supply must have a 6 pin connector for connection. If it is missing, you will have to buy an adapter.
Make sure you have it in advance so that you are not in for any unpleasant surprises in the future.
Other Features
Other features of the GTX 1060 include:
- Possibility of connecting multiple monitors;
- Support OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX;
- The number of transistors used is 4,400 million;
- The distance between transistors in the video card processor is 16 nanometers;
Method 1: Update device software
Typically the problem described is related to drivers. They are either not installed at all or downloaded from third-party sources. In any case, for the system to understand what equipment and how to work with it, original drivers are needed. First, download the software for the motherboard and take the files from the official website. We are interested in the chipset and VGA driver if the board has integrated video. If hardware support has already ended, download the latest version. How to install motherboard drivers is written in a separate article.
Most laptops are equipped with two video cards, so we also download software for the chipset and integrated graphics processor. You will find detailed instructions for updating drivers using a Lenovo laptop as an example on our website.
We download video drivers for a discrete graphics card from the official website of its manufacturer. If they are already installed, but the system still does not see the device, do a clean installation by removing the old software, for example, using the DDU utility. We wrote in detail about ways to update video card drivers and remove already installed ones in separate articles.
Additionally, before installing the software, try removing monitors from the corresponding tab in Device Manager. This worked for some users.
Testing the GTX 1060 video card
When testing the GTX 1060, the following indicators were revealed:
- Background noise at a distance of 100 centimeters from the video card is 20 decibels;
- Minimum operating temperature – 38o;
- Maximum – 75o;
- The card has been successfully tested on modern games and programs, showing decent performance without loss of performance;
When running the Destiny 2 game on minimum settings, the FPS indicators were around 160, and at maximum settings they were no lower than 22.
Final Tips
Unfortunately, often purchasing a dedicated GPU ends up trying to figure out why the laptop can't see the graphics card. The video card on a laptop often does not work because the GPU BIOS is faulty. This can be fixed by replacing the component's firmware. Otherwise, you will have to be content with the standard that the VGA interface is able to convey. In this case, you will not be able to install AMD or Nvidia drivers. Having no experience in changing the firmware, it is better to seek help from specialists.
If you suspect the video card itself is faulty, and the monitor does not see the video card, check how it works in conjunction with another computer. If there is no success with other equipment, take the video card to a service center to find out the reasons. Perhaps specialists will identify the defect and replace it for you under warranty.
In addition to a malfunction of the video card, the problem may be an inoperative PCI-E x16 port through which it is connected to the motherboard. If the GPU works fine when connected to another PC, the connector is most likely to blame, or the motherboard does not support this type of connected hardware. The solution in this case would be to replace the outdated board model with a newer one. If you have questions about why your video card is not showing up, ask them in the comments and we will help you solve the problem that your video card is not visible in Windows Device Manager.

Safe overclocking of Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 video card
You can overclock the GTX 1060 using a special utility called MSI Afterburner. Two parameters are accelerated:
- Video memory frequency;
- GPU frequency;
Before overclocking, make sure that the power supply has more power than necessary. For our card, a 400 W power supply is considered standard, and after overclocking you will need a unit with a power of at least 500 W. This should be taken into account, otherwise nothing good will come of your venture. During overclocking, try to increase power gradually, checking the system for stability. Keep in mind that any overclocking implies a deviation from factory standards, which means it is performed at your own peril and risk. It is advisable to overclock any system elements in the presence of a competent specialist.
Method 5: Checking the Hardware
Check the components associated with the video card. Check the power of the power supply. Perhaps it is not enough for normal operation of the device. In this case, purchasing a new power supply will solve the problem. Check if the auxiliary power is connected correctly. Take out the card, remove any dust from it and carefully clean the contacts with an eraser.
If the design of the motherboard allows, change the slot or, if possible, connect a known working video card to it. Alternatively, you can connect the graphics card to another computer. These steps will help you understand whether the video adapter itself is faulty or the problem is with other equipment.
We hope the described methods helped the system see the video card. If the problem persists, study the manual for the device, and also read the information about it on the manufacturer’s website. It is possible that the graphics card was developed much earlier than the release of Windows 10 and does not meet its minimum requirements, which means that there is a possibility that the system will not detect it.

Water cooling is required when using the GTX 1060 6GB for mining. This will reduce the load on the system and extend its service life. The advantages of such cooling include:
- Improving system performance;
- Possibility of cooling several devices simultaneously;
- Compact dimensions;
Minuses:
- Difficult to install and configure correctly;
- A specially prepared liquid is used as water, which costs money. Tap water will not work;
- There may be a leak, which will lead to a short circuit in the system;
- High price;
The process of installing video card drivers in Windows 10
First, provide your computer with drivers by visiting the official pages of video card manufacturers. Then proceed to remove the already installed device software.
How to remove drivers?
It is required not only to remove the existing software, but also not to allow the operating system to take from its own resources and then install them. Incorrect installation of video device software reduces the speed of the system as a whole and is the main reason why the OS does not see the equipment.
Mining Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB
Only the 1060 6 GB model is suitable for mining, since the younger version, starting in 2022, will not be able to store the DAG file of top cryptocurrencies in memory, which continue to grow in size every year. It will no longer be possible to extract ether from them. The GTX 1060 6 GB is popular among miners due to its large power reserve for overclocking. To compare:
- At the base core frequencies of GeForce GTX video cards, the Ether mining speed is 19 MHS/sec;
- In an overclocked state, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 video card with a frequency increased by 900 megahertz, the mining speed increased to 24 MHS/sec;
At the same time, power consumption does not grow critically, which makes the GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB so attractive for mining.

Method 3: BIOS Setup (UEFI)
The BIOS of motherboards with an integrated graphics core is usually equipped with a function for switching video cards. It can be useful if, for example, you bought a discrete graphics card, inserted it into a PCI Express slot, connected it to a monitor, turned on the computer, but there is no image on the screen, although you can hear that the system has booted. This may mean that the corresponding slot is disabled at the BIOS (UEFI) level. Many laptops also have this option. Use it if one of the video cards is not detected by the system.
The name of the function for switching graphics and enabling slots may differ in different BIOSes. Information about this, as well as the availability of the option, should be clarified in the instruction manual of the motherboard or laptop.
Before setting up the BIOS, check for updates for it. It is not recommended to do this if the computer is stable, but given the possible conflict with the hardware, there is a chance that the problem will be solved with a new firmware version. We described in detail what the BIOS (UEFI) update process looks like in general in another article.
