Review and testing

The video adapter is 25 cm long and occupies two expansion slots. The cooling system is equipped with two fans with Sapphire Nitro logos printed on them. The video card is equipped with a fairly large radiator with four heat pipes - two with an increased diameter of 8 mm and two of 6 mm, which, due to its design, removes heat from all elements on the board at once.

The printed circuit board is a video card with enhanced power supply; high-quality electronic components are used here, including special chokes in a ribbed housing and black polymer capacitors.

On the side there is a large illuminated Sapphire logo.

With a gaming load, the video card shows a stable 1400 MHz (core frequency indicator). Temperatures under load can reach 69–73 °C. at fan speeds of 1400–2200 rpm.

Tests have shown that in games the video card shows moderate temperatures and often operates with little noise.

In the 3DMark Time Spy test, the video card beats the Radeon RX 580 and GeForce GTX 1060 with a difference of 2.7% and 4.2%.

Video card features

System for quickly checking the condition of the cooling system (Fan Check)

In new generation video cards, we have introduced a system for quickly checking the status of the cooling system. Fan Check will allow you to monitor the status of fans using the SAPPHIRE TriXX 3.0 utility and immediately contact support if problems arise.

Easily replaceable fans with NITRO Quick Connect system

The fans used in SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon™ RX 480 graphics cards support Quick Connect. This means that they can be easily removed, cleaned and replaced, since they are securely fixed with just one screw, and there is no need to disassemble the casing or other elements of the video card.

New efficient NITRO Free Flow cooling system design

We noticed that traditional cooling systems with axial fans direct some of the hot air back, which causes an increase in the temperature of the video card. In the new series of video cards, we use a new design of the NITRO Free Flow cooling system, which allows for more efficient distribution of air flows and removal of hot air from the system.

NITRO Boost Switch

For overclocking enthusiasts, SAPPHIRE has provided additional features that allow you to squeeze even more out of the new NITRO+ graphics card. NITRO Boost switch (Dual BIOS) increases frequency and power limit for greater performance. SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon™ RX 480 features an 8-pin auxiliary power connector for improved overclocking potential.

Intelligent Fan Control System NITRO CoolTech

The advanced Intelligent Fan Control System III completely shuts off fans based on load, and thanks to NITRO CoolTech technology, fans start at exactly 52°C for an optimal balance between performance and noise.

Proprietary Dual-X cooling with two quiet fans

Sapphire's proprietary Dual-X cooling features two quiet, oversized fans and a modern radiator. The new blade shape of the 95mm fans allows for more efficient air circulation and reduced noise levels compared to previous models.

The fans are equipped with double ball bearings, which have an 85% longer service life compared to fans with plain bearings. The improved shape of the blades reduces noise by 10% compared to previous generation fans.

Two HDMI connectors for working with virtual reality devices

The SAPPHIRE NITRO series of gaming video cards is equipped with two HDMI connectors specifically for working with virtual reality devices. Two HDMI connectors allow you to simultaneously connect a high-resolution monitor and the latest virtual reality headset.

HDMI version 2.0b with 18 Gbps bandwidth allows up to 32 channels of audio and supports 4K 50/60 (2160P) resolution, while maintaining full backward compatibility with previous versions of HDMI.

Reduced energy consumption thanks to Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) technology

Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) technology allows you to adjust the number of frames per second in real time. This feature reduces GPU consumption (useful for games where the frame rate is much higher than the refresh rate of the display), thereby reducing heat output and fan speed, which further reduces graphics card noise.

Frame rate management limits performance not only in 3D scenes, but also in splash screens, loading screens and menus, where frame rates reach hundreds of frames per second, often unnecessarily. Users can set the cap to a maximum level to avoid unreasonable frame rates found in menus, for example, while still benefiting from response times above 60 fps.

DirectX® 12 support for maximum gaming performance

DirectX® 12 is the latest version of the graphics API from Microsoft®, giving game developers more efficient access to hardware. Game developers can take advantage of DX12 to increase frame rates, improve image quality, reduce latency for virtual reality (VR) devices, or a balanced combination of these capabilities. Regardless of the developer's choice, AMD graphics cards allow gamers to enjoy DirectX® 12 support.

Now connecting and using an external Radeon™ graphics card is easier than ever. With AMD XConnect™ technology, your external Radeon™ graphics card can easily be connected to your compatible ultra-thin laptop or 2-in-1 via Thunderbolt™ 3 at any time, just like a regular USB drive - a first for external graphics cards!

Supports multi-monitor configurations for gaming, work and multimedia entertainment (AMD Eyefinity Technology)

We will take you beyond the boundaries of conventional monitors. AMD Eyefinity is a technology that allows images from a single graphics card to be displayed on multiple screens. This will make the gameplay more immersive and the workflow more convenient and efficient (42% on average and more in some scenarios).

A new level of immersion and realism. Modern games look great on three monitors, but only solutions powered by AMD Radeon™ graphics will allow you to play on five at once. You can create your own configuration using up to 6 displays simultaneously.

AMD Crossfire™ for Multi-GPU Operation

AMD Crossfire™ technology is designed to create powerful gaming stations with multiple graphics cards. It allows you to use 2 or more video cards in one combination to achieve the highest PC performance. AMD Crossfire™ works for graphics cards of different price ranges. Flexible configuration allows you to choose how many video cards - two, three or four - to combine to create the ideal system.

AMD LiquidVR for life-like virtual reality

LiquidVR™ is AMD's initiative to create a comfortable and realistic virtual reality experience by creating an immersive experience that makes situations, objects or characters in the virtual world appear real. Developed in close collaboration with the ecosystem's leading technology partners, LiquidVR™ technology's software and hardware optimizations address common VR shortcomings, such as reducing motion-to-photon latency to below 10 milliseconds. This is an important step towards solving basic difficulties, such as motion sickness, which can occur when turning your head in a virtual world, sometimes even a few milliseconds are not enough to display a new perspective.

HDR High Dynamic Range support

Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a real boon for gamers and movie fans who truly value image quality. This technology allows for increased color range and contrast on compatible displays. Games with HDR support look amazingly bright and crisp compared to even the highest quality SDR content. With new HDR content processing technologies, Radeon RX 480 graphics cards are ready for the future of gaming on next-generation HDR displays.

Overclocking

Without increasing the voltage on the GPU, only 1460 MHz can be achieved. This is the maximum while maintaining complete stability in any game. However, there is a need to raise the Power Limit by 15% so that the video card has enough power for such a frequency. To achieve a higher frequency, you need to unlock voltage control and monitoring in the Afterburner, and if necessary, check the “Expand the limits of the official overclocking mode” checkbox so that the sliders in the Afterburner move further. but be careful, you can burn the video card. Also, when overclocking, it would be a good idea to raise the fan speed to at least 1900 rpm and the video card will become even cooler than without overclocking. The memory easily reaches the 2000 MHz mark, but it’s better not to overclock it further if you don’t want to get artifacts in games and reduce the service life of the video card, because if artifacts are already appearing, this means that the video memory is working exhaustively and is unlikely to be useful to it.

Customer reviews, advantages and disadvantages

Buyers were satisfied with the cooling system on the video card and the level of acoustic comfort when using it. The cooling system uses not only a fan, but also a video card backplate, which is used as an additional radiator.

The video adapter has two power connectors, 8 and 6 pins, but the device also starts when connected to one 8-pin connector.

Users indicated the price as a disadvantage (the card is one of the most expensive on this chip).

Another disadvantage is the reduced memory frequency, but this can easily be compensated for by overclocking. A video card with such memory characteristics loses its attractiveness for miners.

I bought the graphics card on sale for $160, which was a great deal. This card is capable of running any game I like at over 60fps, so I have no complaints about it. I learned early on that 4GB vram is enough for 1080p gaming on ultra settings (Deus Ex Mankind Divided uses 3.8GB). If you want to play higher resolution games then I highly recommend an 8GB card as a minimum, but preferably a Vega 56 or GTX 1070 or better. The back panel looks great and it blends in with my black system unit. The card's fans do an excellent job of cooling, and in demanding games the temperature rarely exceeds 70 degrees. Sapphire did a great job on this.

Flaws

1.The most important drawback is adjusting the fan speed

I welcome the creation of quiet video cards, but Sapphire seems to have decided to do this to the point of fanaticism. Well really. Add 200-300 rpm, the card will not become much noisier, but the temperature will drop by at least 6 degrees. Not a huge figure, of course, but this is in my case, when the Zalman z3 case (3 fans in silent mode about 900 rpm), I’m just pleased when my video card does not heat up to more than 70 degrees and I think you wouldn’t refuse it , moreover, with a virtually unchanged noise level. What's going on in stuffy, completely closed cases, and I'll tell you what - the video heats the entire system. So if you have such a completely closed case, devoid of fans, and even the power supply is located on top and the cooler on the processor is a boxed one, forget about this video card, look towards models with a lower frequency or change the case, which I think will be more reasonable.

2. The second and final drawback is high power consumption

Is this a disadvantage? For me no, but you need to be objective, for many this is a disadvantage. For those who don’t want to spend money on a normal power supply that produces an honest 500 watts and has at least one 8-pin connector for a video card (the second can be connected with an adapter from two Molex to 6-pin, it will work, but I don’t recommend doing that) For greedy miners counting every penny for electricity. For environmental enthusiasts trying to stuff their home with extremely energy-efficient electronics. For ordinary players, all this is unimportant and they are ready to put up with this drawback for the sake of games. Speaking of games, we’ll soon start testing them, but first we’ll talk about overclocking. Oh yeah, I forgot it consumes 180 watts without overclocking. The Power Limit of the chip hardwired into the BIOS is 175 watts, but don’t forget that there is also video memory, coolers, backlighting…. they also consume energy, although not so much, so a video card can consume more than 175 watts without additionally raising the Power Limit.
