TOP 3 largest manufacturers of ASIC equipment for cryptocurrency mining

ASIC - what is it and how does it work?

In the broad sense of the word, an ASIC is an integrated circuit that has a narrow range of applications due to a strictly defined set of functions.

ASIC in cryptocurrency mining is special equipment for mining cryptocurrencies of a certain algorithm.

ASICs have many chips and a large amount of memory, and a higher hashrate, so ASIC mines more coins than GPUs. As soon as an ASIC appears for some algorithm, mining this algorithm on video cards becomes unprofitable: the power of the GPU cannot compete with the power of the ASIC.

Many coins try to protect their network from ASIC mining, and as soon as an ASIC for their current algorithm appears, they immediately change it in order to remain available for GPU mining. Such coins are called ASIC stable.

However, coins do not always fulfill their promise to immediately change the algorithm and remain resistant to ASICs. An example is some coins of the Equihash algorithm.

It is impossible to insert an ASIC into a computer and use it as a video card, for example, for games or other computer work.

ASIC is an independent equipment. This is its advantage and disadvantage at the same time. If the mining of the algorithm for which you bought the ASIC is closed, then you will have no choice but to simply throw your equipment in the trash. The first ASICs appeared long before mining - in 1984 to work with graphics. Powerful microcircuits came into mining in 2012 to solve the first digital currency - Bitcoin, working on the SHA-256 algorithm.

What cryptocurrencies can be mined on ASIC?

Cryptocurrency mining on an ASIC miner
As you already know, ASIC miners by default support only one hashing algorithm, while allowing you to mine any PoW coins based on it.

Currently, most of the ASICs produced are designed for the SHA-256 algorithm, which is the most common, since it powers the progenitor of all cryptocurrencies - Bitcoin. In addition to Bitcoin, ASIC can be used to mine Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Bitcoin SV (BSV), Peercoin (PPC), Syscoin (SYS), NameCoin (NMC), Unobtanium (UNO) and another hundred and fifty lesser-known altcoins.

All other ASIC devices, depending on the supported algorithm, allow you to mine the following cryptocurrencies:

  1. Ethash - Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Ubiq (UBQ), Metaverse (ETP), Musicoin (Music) and about 10 more coins.
  2. X11 - Dash (DASH), PinkCoin (Pink), Pura (PURA) and 200 more shieldcoins.
  3. Scrypt - Dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (LTC), Omni (OMNI), Einsteinium (EMC2), ViaCoin (VIA) and almost 500 more cryptocurrencies.
  4. Equihash - Zcash (ZEC), Komodo (KMD), ZClassic (ZCL), Bitcoin Gold (BTG), Bitcoin Private (BTCP) and a dozen more altcoins.
  5. CryptoNight - Monero (XMR), ByteCoin (BCN), DigitalNote (XDN) and about 20 more coins.
  6. Blake2b/256 – Siacoin (SC), Nano (XRB), Decred (DCR).
  7. Cuckatoo (31+) — Grin (GRIN).

ASIC miners for Bitcoin

Asic Antminer
The majority of ASICs from major manufacturers are configured for the SHA-256 hashing algorithm on which Bitcoin operates. In the case of Canaan and Ebang, absolutely all ASICs they produce (AvalonMiner and Ebit) are focused on Bitcoin.

Bitmain's main line of ASICs (Antminer S and T) also allows you to mine only coins using the SHA-256 algorithm. However, this manufacturer also has models for mining Ethereum (Antminer E), DASH (Antminer D), Litecoin (Antminer L), which are currently out of production, but can still be found in the offers of online sellers.

ASIC for altcoins

Since Bitmain has so far stopped the practice of releasing new ASIC models for altcoins (only the Antminer Z11 for Zcash remains), miners have to pay attention to the products of lesser-known companies:

  • Baikal – produces ASIC miners BK-G28 ($516) for the X11 algorithm (DASH), as well as BK-B ($119) for Blake256/2B (DCR, SC);
  • Innosilicon - offers ASICs A10 ($2500) for coins on Ethash (ETH, ETC, etc.), A9+ ($2900) for Equihash (ZEC), A6+ ($3000) for Scrypt (LTC), G32 ($1250–14000 depending on modification ) for Cuckatoo (GRIN), A5+ ($1780) for X11 (DASH), D9+ ($1500) for Blake256 (DCR), A8+ ($1499) for CryptoNight (XMR).

Until 2022, there were other ASIC offers on the market, both from the mentioned and from other manufacturers. However, the latest downtrend has forced many companies to stop producing some models of ASIC miners or completely abandon this line of business.

Types of ASICs

ASICs are created for a specific algorithm, but there are differences.

ASICS are different:

  • Hashrate. Manufacturers are trying to overtake each other or simply improve their results, so with each new model ASICs become more and more powerful. At this rate, GPU mining may become completely unprofitable (it will only remain for ASIC-resistant algorithms).
  • Algorithms for which they are created . ASICs are coming out with new algorithms, but the old ones are being competed in terms of performance.
  • Cooling system . The ASIC may overheat as it consumes a lot of electricity. Therefore, to work well, it needs a good cooling system (just like the GPU).
  • Manufacturers. There are several large companies supplying the ASIC market - almost all of them concentrate their production in China.

Manufacturers – ASIC websites

The most popular ASIC manufacturer is Bitmain https://www.bitmain.com

Bitman creates ASICs for the following algorithms:

  • Sha-256
  • Scrypt
  • Ethash
  • X11
  • Blake (2b)
  • CryptoNight
  • Equihash

Bitman is trying to create ASICs for other algorithms - they are in development.

An ASIC for the Ethash algorithm is not very dangerous for mining Ethereum coins, since it is not much more powerful than a regular video card rig (for example, from an AMD RX570).

An ASIC for the Equihash algorithm is much more powerful than a conventional GPU farm, so mining on video cards using this algorithm is unprofitable. Some Equihash coins have changed their algorithm to remain GPU-minable.

The rest of the algorithms have been mined on ASICs for a long time, unlike Equihash and Ethash, whose ASICs were released at the beginning of 2022. ASICs have replaced GPUs and monopolized the market on the algorithms mentioned above.

Bitmain Technologies was founded in 2013. The company's headquarters are located in Beijing, and Bitmain has offices in Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, Singapore, Tbilisi, Qingdao, Chengdu, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

You can highlight the company Innosilicon https://www.innosilicon.com.

Innosilicon produces many computer components, including ASICs for various algorithms, for example, Equihash, SHA-256 and others. Innosilicon's headquarters are located in China.

Another well-known company that produces ASICs is ASICminer Company https://asicminer.co.

They only produce ASICs, but there are not many models. Price from 4.5 thousand dollars to 20 thousand dollars. The headquarters of ASICminer Company is located in China.

As you may have noticed, many ASIC manufacturing companies are located in China. There are many manufacturers of ASICs, but they are either not so popular, or their prices for equipment are greatly inflated.

Below are more or less major ASIC manufacturers and links to their official websites.

Company https://www.bitfily.io/product/snow-panther-a1/?lang=ru for SHA-256 and Ethash algorithms. Price from $900 to $2500.

The company https://bitfury.com using the SHA-256 algorithm.

The company https://miner.ebang.com.cn for the SHA-256 algorithm. Price from $700 to $1000.

The company https://pangolinminer.com for the SHA-256 algorithm. Price from $200 to $4000.

How and where to buy ASIC

Buying an ASIC
At the moment, buying an ASIC miner is no more complicated than, for example, purchasing a smartphone. The number of available models from different manufacturers allows you to choose an ASIC to suit your taste and financial capabilities.

You can buy ASICs on the official websites of manufacturers, as well as in various online stores, including thematic ones, that is, dedicated specifically to mining equipment.

The price of ASIC miners on the web resources of local sellers may differ significantly from the original manufacturer’s price. But here you have to choose what is more important - to receive the ASIC within a few days after ordering or in weeks, or even months, as is usually the case when purchasing equipment on foreign sites.

In addition, in some countries, for example in the Russian Federation, you can often encounter a situation where customs officers do not allow ASICs imported from abroad, qualifying them as “data encryption equipment.” To solve this problem, local sellers can use a trick - import ASIC miners disassembled and assemble them within the country. It is clear that such operations require certain labor costs, which affect the final cost of the ASIC in addition to standard markups from sellers.

Another option is to buy used ASIC models on various message boards. True, in this case, most often it will be a matter of purchasing outdated equipment, which is unlikely to bring significant profit.

The best ASIC manufacturers

ASIC Manufacturer
The main supplier of ASIC equipment in the world is China. The reason is that the first ASICs were invented in this country and the first companies producing them appeared. Also important is the availability of inexpensive components and cheap labor in China.

There are also ASIC manufacturers in other countries, but their number and production volumes are much smaller. In Europe it is the Swedish company KnC Miner. In the USA - Coin Terra, Innosilicon Technology and NVMINER. In Japan - GMO Internet (ASIC production is currently stopped). The TSMC semiconductor chip factory from Taiwan is also working on the creation of mining chips.

In total, more than 30 different manufacturers from all over the world now offer their ASIC models to miners. However, when choosing an ASIC for mining, it is better to choose the latest models from the most well-known and reliable suppliers.

Bitmain

Bitmain Company
The largest manufacturer of ASIC devices from China. The company was founded in 2013 and in a fairly short time became the leader in the mining equipment industry, which it remains to this day, occupying about 70% of the entire market. In addition, it owns the two largest mining pools BTC.com and Antpool.

The Bitmain company is primarily known in the world for its line of ASIC Antminer bitcoin miners, which are considered one of the best devices of this class in terms of productivity and payback.

Canaan Creative

Another Chinese company founded in 2013, which occupies a significant share of the ASIC miner market (2nd place in the world - 20% of the industry).

It produces ASICs for mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies based on the SHA-256 algorithm under the ASIC AvalonMiner brand. The latest model (1066) has a hashrate of 50 TH/s and power consumption of 3250 W.

At the beginning of 2022, the company released a miner with an immersion cooling system called Avalon A1066I. The equipment hashrate is 50 TH/s with a power consumption of 3400 W, and the device can be overclocked by 45%.

Canaan ASICs are popular due to their ergonomic design, high-quality assembly, low noise levels, advanced cooling technologies and fairly affordable pricing.

Ebang Communication

Mining on ASIC
The third largest manufacturer of mining equipment, also from China. Founded in 2010, initially as a telecommunications company. In 2016, it transferred the main focus of its activities to the development of microcircuits and ready-made devices for the blockchain industry.

It is known among miners for the line of ASIC Ebit (SHA-256), which, in terms of stability, price and productivity, have been competing with ASICs from Bitmain for several years. The latest model Ebit E12+ with a 10nm chip, a hashrate of 50 TH/s and power consumption of 2500 W.

Bitfury

A technology diversified company that has existed since 2011. The largest participant in the mining equipment market outside of China. Bitfury not only sells ASIC devices, but also does mining itself, providing about 5% of the total Bitcoin hashrate.

The company's main activity is the development of technologies to improve chips used in Bitcoin mining, supply of chips to mining companies, as well as direct production of industrial ASICs.

The latest achievement is the 14nm Bitfury Clarke chip, which runs the Bitfury Tardis industrial mining ASIC, providing maximum performance of up to 80 TH/s with a power consumption of 6.3 kW.

Price of ASIC miners

ASIC price
Unlike 2022, when manufacturers sold ASICs at discounts in order to somehow survive during the crypto winter, in 2021, due to the bullrun, the demand for ASICs is simply huge. On the websites of most major suppliers, many popular models are sold out and are only available for pre-orders.

Without any problems, you can buy budget ASIC models with minimal profitability indicators:

  • Bitmain Antminer S9 (13.5–16 TH/s depending on modification) will cost $800 from local sellers;
  • Canaan AvalonMiner 852 (15 TH/s) - latest price on the official website; in advertisements and online stores the average price is $350-450;
  • Ebang Ebit E10 (16–24 TH/s in different modifications) - $200 from third-party Internet providers.

Newer ASICs with an average power of about 30 TH/s (Antminer S15, Avalon 1047, Ebit E11) will cost $1100–1300 from the manufacturer and 20–30% more expensive from other sellers.

The most popular ASIC miners at the moment with top power and energy consumption indicators will cost an order of magnitude more (manufacturer price/on websites):

  • Antminer S17 (53 TH/s) – $2100/$2800;
  • Antminer S17 pro (53 Th/s) – $3500/$3600;
  • Antminer S19 (95 Th/s) – $2000/$2500;
  • Antminer S19 pro (110 Th/s) – $3700/$4000;
  • Avalon 1066 (50 TH/s) – $1500/$2200;
  • Ebit E12+ (50 TH/s) — $2410/$2900.

Sales of the new ASIC Bitmain Antminer S19 pro also recently started, which boasts a hashrate of 110 TH/s. Ordering equipment is not available in the official store. Local sellers who managed to reserve the new scarce model are selling it at a price above $18,000.

List of the best ASIC miners

It is very difficult to say which ASIC miner is better, since the complexity of all algorithms is constantly increasing, and new, more and more powerful ASICs are being released.

Do not forget about electricity in the place where the ASIC will be located, as they consume a lot of electricity. The more expensive the electricity fee, the less profitable ASIC mining is.

Russia is the most favorable country for ASIC mining, since electricity here is noticeably cheaper than in other countries.

CountryPrice for electricity

Russia from 2-8 rubles
Ukraine from 4 to 9 rubles
Belarus from 4 to 11 rubles
Poland from 10 to 15 rubles
USA from 8 to 30 rubles
Germany from 22-30 rubles

The price for electricity is the lowest in Russia, which means that a larger number of ASICs will be available to citizens of the Russian Federation.

But the most profitable ASIC miner will be the newest one (or just released), since its task is to beat its competitors and its previous models.

The best ASICs are produced by the following companies:

  • Bitmain
  • Pangolin
  • ASICminer
  • Baikal

Manufacturers often resort to releasing a new ASIC miner, making pre-sales for 1-2 months, and as soon as ASICs purchased during the pre-sale period begin shipping, the same company releases an improved (more powerful) model for the same algorithm.

Let us repeat: it is difficult to name the most profitable and profitable ASIC, since this market is an arms race. Therefore, you will not be able to guess which ASIC miner you are buying: the newest one or not, since while it is on its way to you, a more powerful model may come out.

But there is another important factor: in addition to power, reliability and assembly play an important role in the quality of the ASIC. Here everything is not so happy: apart from beautiful words from the manufacturer, you will not have any guarantee that the ASIC will not break in 2-3 months or faster, that it will not burn out, or simply that all the main coins of this algorithm will not go to the new algorithm, to protect GPU mining.

We advise you to focus on the indicators of profitability calculators (taking into account prices for electricity), reviews of users who have already purchased this ASIC, as well as news of coins of the selected algorithm, if this is the first ASIC for this algorithm: are the coins going to switch to a new algorithm in order to become ASIC resistant.

Old ASICs instead of new ASIC miners

In June, forklog.com reported on a fraudulent scheme aimed at defrauding those purchasing new miners. According to the online publication, over several months the demand for miners has grown sharply and ASIC Antminer S9, S9i and S9j have become especially popular. The already mentioned S9 today is most relevant in the S9j modification at 14.5 TH/s, its cost is about 33-35 thousand rubles.

The essence of the scheme is that visually indistinguishable Antminer S9 with a performance of 13.5 TH/s are sold under the guise of new S9j with 14.5 TH/s, after first re-sticking the stickers on the device body and on the hash boards. To increase profits, scammers often use old, worn-out miners, cleaning them of dust before gluing them on. By receiving a less productive model instead of a relatively promising one, a crypto entrepreneur who bought such an ASIC automatically runs the risk of encountering burnt chips.

Reliable data about the device can be obtained by checking serial numbers, which is not always carried out by everyone. There is another way - measuring the real hashrate. Evaluation by firmware rarely gives results, since the software is often changed to new ones. Visually, the user interface is no different from that of the new miner. This firmware shows the user statistical data (“jakes” and “ikes”) in the web interface. At the same time, real statistics differ significantly from fake ones.

Another option is overclocking. Overclocked miners can be sold as new+ or as old. The fact is that the device is based on a miner with several burnt chips. With the help of firmware, burned-out chips are excluded from the circuit, and the rest are overclocked. The wear and tear of the remaining chips (due to overheating) increases many times over - cooling remains standard, and over time the remaining chips also burn out.

Fraudsters with glued and overclocked ASICs are often caught on Avito and other trading platforms. There are many Chinese and Russian stores selling “stickers”. According to forklog, there are 5 fraudulent outlets selling such devices in Moscow.

What mining equipment should I choose on Aliexpress?

The trading platform offers a huge variety of models, most of which are designed for mining popular coins. Depending on the need to obtain a certain type of cryptocurrency, you should select the appropriate chip installed in the generators:

  • SHA256 – configured to work with bitcoin;
  • SCRYPT – mines litecoin;
  • X11 – allows you to receive dashcoin.

To determine what technology the device uses, just go to the product page and carefully study the description. Not only the technical specifications will be indicated there, but also the chip used.

The equipment presented on Aliexpress differs greatly in price. This is due to various parameters:

  • speed of execution of assigned chains of mathematical problems or hashing;
  • dimensions depend on the number of installed chips, the cooling system and additional sensors installed inside the generator;
  • efficiency, in other words, the amount of electricity consumed;
  • cost, the higher the performance and lower the electricity consumption, the more expensive the purchase will be.

When purchasing mining equipment, you must first of all be guided by your available budget. When choosing a chip, you should carefully read the statistics and pricing of the cryptocurrency you are interested in. Study all the drops in price over the past six months and get acquainted with forecasts for the near future.

Having received all the necessary information and decided on the coin you want to mine, you can choose the miner itself. To do this, you will need to carefully study the technical parameters of the device and try to buy equipment with minimal power consumption and high hash rates. The more chips installed, the better. Generators always operate at maximum frequencies and individual chips often burn out. Therefore, you should give preference to miners that have at least 150 chips installed.

Safety of purchasing an ASIC miner

To buy an ASIC miner and not be deceived, you need to follow the rules:

  • Mandatory verification of serial numbers from the device board;
  • Eliminate devices with a suspiciously low price;
  • Carrying out a test for real hashrate;
  • Inspect for the presence of dust (especially in places where it is difficult to remove); dust is unacceptable in a new device and undesirable in an old one;
  • Checking mechanical performance, correct cooling operation, thermal performance (the fan noise of even a used miner should not exceed the declared value, the temperature of the device should be stable and within the normal range specified in the specification).

Alternative firmware is in high demand. For example, various custom software that can reduce energy consumption. Stories about significant overclocking without a significant threat to the device should be taken either as incompetence of the seller or as a deliberate lie.

How to mine Ethereum on ASIC - instructions

The process of mining ETH cryptocurrency using an ASIC miner involves following simple steps:

  1. Preparing for work. We install the ASIC, connect the power supply cables to the case.
  2. We connect the ASIC miner to the network equipment and PC, then connect the device to the Network.
  3. We install ASIC software on your computer for Ethereum mining (the best option is Claymore's Dual Miner).
  4. We go to the folder with the program and find the “batch file” start.bat.
  5. We enter the selected pool, register and copy the settings for miners.
  6. We make changes to the body file - we change the ETH storage number and the worker settings.

The start.bat file should contain the following information - a link to the pool, wallet address, and the name of the worker. It is possible to change the server to one that is closer in location. After making changes, save the information and close the document. To quickly launch, transfer the “body file” to the desktop and activate the “automatic” launch.

Profitability of mining Ethereum using ASIC

Before purchasing an ASIC for mining and Ethereum production, we calculate the level of profit and future return on expenses. Average costs for setting up a farm for Ethereum mining:

  • Bitmain Antminer E3. On the official website the price of the device is $800. To this amount are added the costs of delivery, which takes place within 10 days from the date of transfer of the full amount. Additionally, you will need a power supply (the original price is $95).
  • Purchasing a computer and network equipment (if you don’t have it). As noted, a regular PC or laptop is suitable for mining Ethereum using an ASIC miner. This expense item is $300–500.
  • Purchase of an uninterruptible power supply (optional) - about $100.

Let's give the profitability of Bitmain Antminer E3 when mining Ethereum as of March 13, 2022, excluding electricity costs (this parameter is individual for each region). We take into account that the ASIC power is 760 W. The device operates 24 hours a day and without interruption. This means that the monthly electricity consumption (only from the ASIC miner) will be 547.2 kW. The power consumption of a PC, laptop and other equipment is added to this indicator.

The hashrate of Bitmain Antminer E3 is 200 MH/s. With these parameters, the miner’s monthly profit is almost $110 (without electricity costs), taking into account the Ethereum rate at the time of writing. Annual income: $1,320. The total cost to create an ASIC farm is about $1,500 (using one device). This means that the payback period for ASIC for mining (as of the date indicated above) is 13.5 months.

When calculating, it is important to consider:

1 course. The price of Ethereum is adjusted regularly. Back on July 20, 2022, the ETH exchange rate was $236 per coin. As of March 13, 2022, the cost is $1,885. Before mining Ethereum on ASIC, you need to study the trends in the cryptosphere, read the opinions and forecasts of experts on changes in the exchange rate price.

2. Difficulty of extraction. The calculations take into account the complexity parameter. If this indicator increases, the efficiency of the ASIC miner used will decrease. The difficulty parameter is influenced by a number of factors, including the active use of ASIC miners by members of the crypto network.

3. Miner price. With the increase in demand for Ethereum mining using ASICs, the cost of the device may also increase. If the cost of the device increases, the payback period will also increase.

4. Cost of electricity. Electricity costs vary in each region. For example, in Moscow you will have to pay about $0.08 for 1 kWh. Taking into account that the ASIC consumes 547.2 kWh per month, the total monthly costs will be $49. If you work in a region with a lower cost of 1 kWh of electricity, the miner's costs will be lower. For example, in the Murmansk region of the Russian Federation, electricity costs are half as much.

When assembling a farm on an ASIC, it is important to take into account two negative factors - increased noise and heat generation. There are several solutions available here - the use of soundproof boxes with additional cooling or Ethereum mining in a separate room (additional costs for renting the room may be required).

Why is it profitable to buy mining equipment on Aliexpress?

The main advantage when purchasing a virtual currency generator on the Aliexpress trading platform is the price benefit. The difference in cost can reach 30%, compared to purchasing equipment with similar characteristics in local stores. Delivery of most products is free, which will also help you save your budget and avoid spending on transportation costs. For maximum savings, you can find offers from various services with a return of a small percentage of the money spent through the “Cashback” option.

Another important factor in favor of purchasing on Aliexpress is the buyer protection function. The option applies to absolutely all products and works according to the following principle:

  • the transferred funds for the goods do not immediately go to the seller’s account; after payment they will be withheld on the balance of the trading platform;
  • if the equipment has not arrived after the delivery period, the money will be returned to the buyer’s account;
  • the arrived product does not correspond to the description or is defective, in this case you can return part of the money spent or, if the equipment is faulty, then the entire amount;
  • money will be credited to the seller's account only after the buyer confirms receipt of the goods in proper condition.

Based on these points, we can conclude that both parties are interested in good quality of the product.
