Dash cryptocurrency is a popular digital asset, the peculiarity of which is the complete anonymity of transactions. The coin appeared in 2014 and immediately won the attention of private investors and cryptocurrency market players. Initially, the asset was called DarkCoin .
The name change in favor of Dash is due to the association of the previous name with DarkNet, the shadow market of the World Wide Web. Dash is a crypto asset that has managed to integrate into the payment industry. The project management entered into an agreement with WIREX. After this, the digital currency became available in more than 200 countries around the world. Users can link their wallet to a VISA card. In order to start enjoying the benefits of this crypto coin, you need to open the appropriate wallet. Let's try to figure out what official and unofficial Dash wallets exist, what is the difference between online crypto wallets and local ones, and how to create them.
The cryptocurrency coin has gained interest among large investors and private traders. This is because it is trading at over $500 today. The historical maximum was more than $1,000 . However, against the backdrop of the fall in the cryptocurrency market, which occurred at the beginning of 2018, the cost of altcoins, including this one, decreased. Today there is a rise in digital currency. If you invest in an asset on time, you can earn money by the end of the year. The coin is suitable both for storage in a “portfolio” and for small speculative actions, when earnings occur on races and differences in rates of digital assets. Before you buy a coin or start mining Dash, you need to decide where to store it. Let's look at what are the best wallets for storing Dash coins.
- Wallet installation
Dash Core Wallet – crypto wallet installed on your computer
The most common Dash wallet is Dash Core . This is a software product that was proposed by the project developers. Its main advantage is a high degree of data security. The wallet is local. Therefore, you need to download and install it on your computer. The program works on common operating systems - Windows, Linux, OSX. For the convenience of users, a Russian-language version is provided.
The only drawback here is that before getting started, the user needs to download the entire blockchain of this crypto asset. That is, data about all transactions in the system will be stored on the computer. You will have to wait several hours. If data security is important to you, then surviving this period is not a problem.
Wallet installation
Creating a Dash wallet is easy. To do this, go to the official website of the project – dash.org and click on the “Get Dash” tab.
Next, select the wallet version that matches the operating system you are using:
The installation process is simple and no different from installing other programs. During the installation process, you need to select a location on your hard drive where the blockchain crypto coins will be stored.
The installation process is long. In some cases it takes 1-2 days. After it is created, you need to create an access password.
Dash technology
Private Send
Anonymous Transactions
This is a technology unique to Dash (formerly called DarkSend) that allows you to send confidential transactions. A special CoinJoin mixing protocol, which was proposed by Gregory Maxwell (gmaxwell), is responsible for this.
Shuffling denominations to create anonymous transactions must be done manually in the cryptocurrency wallet. The user can choose the number of mixing rounds - from one to eight (the more rounds, the greater the level of anonymity). In order to avoid abuse of the service, a fee is charged for mixing - on average, for one out of ten rounds you need to pay 0.001 DASH. The mixing process takes some time, so you need to wait until anonymous transactions are formed.
When sending a transaction, you need to be very careful, since along with a private transaction, it is possible to send a normal transaction, which can be tracked to the address to which the “change” will arrive. The anonymous transaction amount must be a multiple of the minimum denomination - 0.01 DASH. This was built into the system to avoid the process of sending “change”, which allows the transaction to be traced.
☝️
However, Private Send is an optional feature that the user can use if they wish.
Instant Send
Sending Cryptocurrency
Until 2016, this Dash cryptocurrency technology was called InstantX. It is a service for sending instant transactions (confirmation takes about 1.5 seconds). These transactions are verified by masternodes in an accelerated mode (without creating a block), however, the latter require higher commission payments for this service. Also, checking such “fast” transactions with masternodes allows you to avoid the problem of double-spending (double spending of coins).
The use of Instant Send technology is available both to users who have installed a full-fledged wallet and to those using “thin” clients, including mobile ones.
Masternodes
Unlike the Bitcoin architecture, in which there is only one type of node, in Dash nodes (nodes) are divided into two types - regular mining nodes and masternodes. Any network participant can create a masternode by downloading the full blockchain history and storing a minimum of 1000 DASH in their account. The latter allows you to protect the network from “infiltration” by attackers and carrying out a 51% attack, since disruption of the correct operation of the system will also bring losses to the attacker himself.
It is thanks to masternodes in the Dash system that functions such as Private Send and Instant Send are available. For performing their functions in maintaining the network, masternodes receive a reward of 45% of each mined block. In addition, they have the right to propose their projects, as well as vote for proposed projects regarding the further development of cryptocurrency. According to data on the official cryptocurrency website, 4,100 masternodes are currently active.
X11 encryption algorithm
Dash Encryption Algorithm
Unlike Bitcoin, which uses the SHA-256 encryption algorithm, the Dash cryptocurrency is based on the X11 algorithm, which was invented by Evan Duffield.
X11 is an algorithm that consists of a “mix” of 11 different cryptographic algorithms (Blake, Bmw, Groestl, JH, Keccak, Skein, Luffa, Cubehash, Shavite, Simd, Echo). This approach is more reliable because to hack the network you will need to bypass all 11 algorithms. X11 also made it possible to reduce energy costs for mining. Compared to the Scrypt algorithm, when using the latest generations of central processors, X11 mining requires 30% less electricity and 30-50% less heat dissipation resources.
Consensus
Consensus on the Dash network
The Dash cryptocurrency uses a special consensus algorithm - Proof-of-Activity. It is a combination of the separate capabilities of Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake. Thanks to the coexistence of two consensus algorithms, the Dash system has two types of network participants: miners (who issue coins) and holders (who confirm transactions).
This “hybrid” works as follows:
- Just like in the Bitcoin network, miners solve a cryptographic puzzle to find the nonce and create the correct hash of the block.
- The found hash is sent to the network, and a “blank” is created to form a future block (however, a full block is not created).
- Holders confirm the transactions, as well as the correctness of the hash, after which the correct block is formed and recorded in the blockchain.
In this case, the reward is distributed among all participants: 45% to miners, 45% to holders, 10% goes to DGBB (for network development).
Using the Proof-of-Activity algorithm makes the Dash network more decentralized, since miners do not have a monopoly on the network, unlike typical blockchains like Bitcoin or Ethereum, which operate on a Proof-of-Work basis.
In addition, Proof-of-Activity protects the network from malicious attacks, since no node has complete power to make changes to the blockchain, even if it has 51% of the power. In this case, the other party simply will not confirm his actions.
DGBB (Decentralized Governance by Blockchain)
Today, cryptocurrencies that have a DAO (a mode in which blockchain participants can influence the development of the network) are not something special. However, the Dash cryptocurrency was the first to offer DGBB - decentralized blockchain governance, an analogue of the modern DAO.
The bottom line is that anyone can propose a project aimed at developing the Dash network. For this you need to make a commission payment of 5 DASH
. The decision to implement or not implement the proposed ideas is made by voting, in which only masternodes (i.e. nodes that have at least 1000 DASH in their account) participate. For example, this is how the decision was made to increase the block from 1 MB to 2 MB. The voting process lasted about a day.
Dash Electrum
The next DashCoin wallet is Electrum. Read more in our article about the Electrum wallet. It is an alternative version of the official program. Among the advantages of this application are:
- Data protection.
- Instant transactions.
- “Pleasant” control interface.
- No interruptions in operation.
Availability for most common operating systems.
The work also involves downloading and installing the entire blockchain. It takes a lot of time. Otherwise, the crypto wallet is easy to use.
Wallet installation
First of all, you need to visit the website electrum.dash.org.
Going to the Download tab, you need to select the version of the wallet you are interested in.
You need to run the downloaded installation file and select the standard wallet type, as well as create a new crypto wallet.
After this, a password will appear on the screen to recover lost data. It is recommended to save it. Otherwise, you may not be able to restore access to your crypto wallet. After this, we come up with an access password.
The wallet is installed on the computer. By going to the Receive tab, you can see the address for receiving crypto coins:
Mining Dash
The main purpose of mining any token is to confirm transactions and create new coins.
Dash is based on the X11 algorithm and is mined using an ASIC miner from Bitmain - model Antminer D3 or Miner PinIdea Dr3.
The reward on the blockchain is distributed as follows:
- 45% goes to the miner who confirmed the block;
- 44% goes to the masternode;
- 1% goes to the network budget.
Today, mining on video cards and processors is unprofitable. Individual coin mining will not bring significant income, so it makes sense to join a team. The best pool serving X11 protocol coins is Prohashing. The official website for joint mining is prohashing.com.
