The difficulty of mining cryptocurrency is no longer increasing as smoothly as at the beginning of its appearance.
Once upon a time, it was enough to install a special program on your work PC and easily mine bitcoins. But with the growing popularity of cryptocurrency, an increasing number of users are joining the ranks of miners and taking part in the production of new digital coins. This means that the complexity of the hash functions that machines calculate also increases. An ASIC miner is a special chip that is designed to perform a limited range of tasks. At the moment, ASIC mining is considered the most profitable and less energy-consuming method of mining BTC, LTC, etc. Modern ASIC systems for home use operate on a power supply with a power of 600 W or more, and the performance of such a machine can be compared with dozens of GPUs.
Why are anti-miners needed?
Lately everyone has been hearing about the phenomenon of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin has captured the minds of people not only with its bold concept, in theory capable of dethroning the dollar and dollar banks from the economic throne, but also with its practical suitability for speculation and making secure and anonymous transactions.
However, such freedom comes at a price. And, like any other product related to the circulation of funds, Bitcoin immediately acquired various types of fraud, exploitation and unfair profit-making at the expense of other people.
Many people heard completely absurd news about how unlucky would-be investors bought beautiful plastic coins with the inscription “Bitcoin” from dubious individuals for a lot of money, which had nothing to do with the real cryptocurrency. Of course, this is not a threat to most reasonable people.
But in the digital world of cryptocurrencies, there are much more subtle and invisible methods of criminal exploitation of the population. Many of these methods are not easy for a person without special knowledge or education to even recognize, let alone fight.
In these cases, any owner of a personal computer may find an anti-miner useful. But first you need to figure out why it is needed.
Cryptocurrency mining
Digital currency is known for having a free, but at the same time limited issue. Its release does not belong to any central bank; literally any network participant is able to receive it or contribute to its generation. But it cannot be produced in unlimited quantities - each portion of cryptocurrency appears in a strictly limited quantity as a reward for calculating a “block”.
A block in a cryptocurrency blockchain is a collection of a certain amount of information about the infrastructure of the currency itself. Most often this is information about transactions, currency exchange, etc.
Once a certain number of these transaction records have been collected, any network participant can take this information for processing using their computer. The computer collects this information into a block, encrypts it and sends it for verification and confirmation to other participants in the blockchain network.
Thus, blockchain participants themselves carry out all the bureaucratic work to maintain the currency.
Of course, few people will agree to do this for free, except perhaps only the most ideological supporters of the philosophy of crypto-anarchism. In the process of processing a block of transactions, the computer is heavily loaded with calculations, and therefore consumes a large amount of electricity, which leads to costs.
Therefore, the first transaction in a block is always the so-called “zero transaction” - it automatically pays a portion of cryptocurrency from the void to the account of the person who finished processing the block with this transaction.
Thus, you can earn digital currency by literally donating your computing power to the service of the blockchain network. This process is called mining.
Viruses miners
Typically, mining is carried out on “mining farms” - computers specially prepared for specific computing activities with a large number of video cards or particularly powerful processors.
Both this equipment itself and its maintenance in working order costs a lot of money. During the mining process, computer components are literally “fried” from hard work, becoming completely unusable within a few years, and electricity bills break through the ceiling. Therefore, immoral people have a natural desire to try to mine at someone else’s expense.
This is how mining viruses . Spreading across the network, they are injected into other people's computers, forcing them to calculate blocks of the blockchain of any cryptocurrency. In this case, the profit from the calculations goes to the owner of the virus, while electricity bills and fried video cards go to the victim.
Each personal computer in a network of such zombie miners is weak, but an entire network of hundreds of victims achieves quite a lot of power, and the lack of costs makes it a profitable business.
Anti-miners
Typically, the miner is not considered a threat by antivirus programs. Since the user could install the miner deliberately in order to make a profit himself, mining programs are included in the so-called “riskware” category - “risky programs”. Therefore, if you suspect a mining virus, you should not rely on a regular antivirus in such matters.
Fortunately, the competition between virus writers and the IT security business is constantly raging. Therefore, many large antivirus manufacturers are already offering updates for their protection systems or separate programs that scan the computer for miners.
If your computer is overheating, making noise when idle, and exhibiting suspicious network activity, and your electricity bills have suddenly risen, it may be time to download an anti-miner.
Technical characteristics of Antminer S9
The ASIC miner Antminer S9 case is made of aluminum. This solution is a distinctive feature of all cryptocurrency mining devices produced under odd numbers by BITMAIN. According to the developers, this material is most suitable for making a case, as it allows for additional heat dissipation.
Specialized sleds are attached to the side of the case, allowing you to combine several miners into a horizontal stack. As before, hashing boards can be freely inserted into special slots in the housing without being additionally fixed.
What are ASICS for mining?
The main function performed by a special-purpose integrated circuit (this is how the name ASIC is translated) is to decipher the algorithms on the basis of which the blockchain of all cryptocurrencies operates.
Physically, Bitcoin mining ASICs are small blocks that contain high-performance chips, memory boards and a fan. Professional models are equipped with several processors. Miner miners can have different design designs, be of different shapes, sizes, purposes, and most importantly, have different speed indicators.

Types of ASIC miners
All ASIC-based mining devices can be divided into separate groups according to different parameters.
For example, depending on power consumption, ASIC miner models are:
- homemade - have a compact size and consume from 600 to 700 W (Antminer S1, S3 and S5);
- professional ones - placed on special racks and consume up to 1 kW (Antminer S2 and S4).
ASIC mining equipment is also available for different algorithms:
Preparing and turning on Antminer S9 for the first time
Before turning on the ASIC Miner C9, the user must place it in the most suitable place so that nothing obstructs the air exit from the blower fan. Due to the relatively low level of power consumption of the device, there are no special requirements for connecting it to the network. If there is no power supply button, it is recommended to use a surge protector equipped with a switch.
It is also important to understand the controller board, which is housed in a semi-open aluminum case.
- Card reader for an SD card required for flashing the miner. This may be necessary if the equipment does not start from the built-in memory.
- Reset button to reset settings to default values. It can be used if the connection is configured incorrectly or the miner is unavailable on the network.
- Normal and Fault indicators indicating normal operation of the miner or problems. The first one glows green, the second one glows red.
- Ethernet connector for connecting the cord.
- IP Report button for using BITMAIN's IP Reporter utility.
After checking that all connectors are connected correctly, the device can be turned on. During the first startup, the fans will run for a while at maximum speed. Thus, the system will independently clean itself of dust accumulated during storage or transportation.
If the connection is correct, the fan speed will decrease after a while, and the indicator on the Internet connection connector will begin to blink green. If you use a DCHP server, searching and setting up a subnet for the miner will be done quickly and without much effort.
To obtain information about the address assigned to the device, you need to visit the router's web interface and check the list of DHCP clients. To do this, the user can use a standard utility from BITMAIN called IP Reporter or use one of the network scanning programs. When starting a proprietary utility, you must launch the software and click on the button labeled Start. At the same time, you must hold down the IP report button on the device for several seconds. After some time, the utility will detect the device and display its IP and MAC addresses.
After receiving the address, the user must enter it in the address bar of any Internet browser, after which it will automatically be moved to the web interface. To log in, he will need to enter his username and password. By default, both of these fields require the word root.
Externally, the Antminer S9 web interface has certain similarities with previous models from BITMAIN, but everything is even more simplified. There are no additional settings present in the S7 model. However, an experienced user will be able to perform all the necessary settings using an SSH connection.
In the first tab called System, it is important to pay attention to the special Upgrade tab, with which the user can update the system, save the current device configuration, or restore previously saved settings. If you need to make changes to network settings or set a static IP address, you need to go to the Network tab. However, experts strongly discourage making changes unless necessary, as they may lead to the device being unavailable in the web interface. The only way to solve this problem is to reset it to factory settings using the Reset button.
Most popular models
At the moment, there are several popular models of ASIC miners for cryptocurrency mining. The main supplier of such equipment is, of course, China - since the cheapest licenses, components and salaries are there. One of the largest suppliers of ASIC equipment from China is the Bitmain plant.
ASIC miner is considered according to several conditions:
- mining power (hashrate);
- technical process of chip manufacturing;
- power consumption;
- noise level;
- number and name of chips;
- working temperature.
Here is a summary table of 4 ASIC models popular in 2018:

How does an ASIC miner work?
How an ASIC miner works
All cryptocurrencies that can be mined operate on hashing algorithms that follow the rules of cryptography. A special feature of the ASIC miner is that it supports only one of them. However, from a technical point of view, ASIC can be used to mine any other coin using the same algorithm.
For example, the ASICs that mine Bitcoin work with the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, which is also what Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is built on. In the case of Litecoin (LTC) this is Scrypt, Dash (DASH) is X11, Ethereum (ETH) is Ethash, etc.
At the same time, some manufacturers claim that their ASICs can be used for both Bitcoin and Litecoin mining. But the reason for this is that such ASICs actually contain two independent chips that work with different algorithms.
Due to its narrow focus, ASIC equipment is tens of times more productive and energy efficient than video cards for mining. With their help, finding a hash corresponding to the creation of a new block, followed by receiving a reward, is much faster.
For example, to get the computing power of a modern ASIC, you need to build a farm of at least a dozen top-end video cards.
In this case, the energy consumption will be several times higher than that of an ASIC type device (5–10 kW compared to 1–2 kW).
It is not surprising that this combination of productivity coupled with low energy consumption makes ASICs more attractive to miners compared to other devices. And in some cases, for example with Bitcoin, ASIC is the only way to make a profit from mining at the existing network complexity. Therefore, it is quite natural that ASICS have become so widespread.
Mining on ASIC
At the same time, the main feature of ASICs is their main disadvantage - working with one hashing algorithm significantly limits the ASIC owner in possible options for making a profit. When mining the cryptocurrency for which the ASIC was purchased becomes unprofitable, it can only be reconfigured to a coin “related” to the algorithm. If there are no such options or they are all unprofitable, that is, the ASIC is simply becoming obsolete, you can only try to sell it to someone, thus obtaining at least part of the funds to purchase a new ASIC model. In the case of a farm assembled from modern high-performance video cards, you can always “train” it to mine coins using other algorithms.
As for computing power, the first ASIC miners had a hashrate that did not exceed 65 GH/s, which was enough for 30 video cards. Modern ASIC chips for Bitcoin, according to their characteristics, can replace 300–700 first-generation ASIC devices, providing a hashing rate of 15–60 TH/s.
An important factor when using ASICs for mining cryptocurrencies is their payback - the period of time during which the ASIC covers the costs of its acquisition and begins to make a profit. This parameter will be different for each individual ASIC considered, as it depends on its cost, computing power and supported hashing algorithm.
☝️
As a rule, the payback of an ASIC takes at least 6 months under ideal conditions, which are cheap electricity and an increase in the rate of the mined coin. In reality, this figure often reaches 1.5 years.
How ASIC mining works is clearly shown in the video:
How ASIC works
Shkolota vs serious people
Miners are divided into two types:
- Schoolchildren are most often teenagers who were able to convince their parents to buy a top video card for games, but under the influence of the crypto trend they mine bitcoins or other digital money, and tell their parents how cool they are, that they themselves are already earning money, and their buddies with a smart I'll tell you how they mine and in general they will soon have a whole farm.
- Industrial miners are people who have professional equipment or have assembled farms from video cards. For such people, mining occurs on a very large scale.
Setting up a device for mining
How does the first connection to antminer S9 occur?
- Install the miner so that there is nothing obstructing the cooling fans.
- Check for damage to the housing and any unusual sounds when turning over. Due to the cooling radiator peeling off, a short circuit is possible when turned on; this can be easily avoided by making a preliminary diagnosis.
- The power supply must be connected in series to each Pin connector. If you connect 2 power supplies at once to increase the power reserve during overclocking and achieve the maximum value of the antminer S9 th/s, check whether the connectors of both power supplies are connected to the connectors of one board.
The green Normal indicator blinking indicates that the antminer S9 connection was successful. If the red Fault signal turns on at startup, wait (2-5 minutes) until the device returns to normal mode.
Further configuration of antminer S9 begins with determining the network address. Connect the ASIC to the Internet and check the DHCP client lists in your router interface, or use the IP Reporter application.
- Install and launch the application and press the Start button on the display.
- Press and hold the IP report button on the antminer S9 control panel for 5-6 seconds.
- After the program determines the IP and MAC address of the device, enter the IP in the address bar of the browser and enter the username and password (root - root) to go to the miner interface.
- Open the GeneralConfiguration tab and enter the data of the selected pool in the antminer s9 settings.
If the connection is correct and the standard settings are saved, the miner will begin mining cryptocurrency automatically on the BITMAIN pool. In this case, the user’s first priority is to configure the ASIC S9 for the pool or register on the pool itself if these actions have not been performed by him previously. Miners from BITMAIN use a custom modification of the protocol called startum. In this regard, full-fledged cryptocurrency mining is possible only on Chinese pools such as F2pool and Antpool.
To create an account on bitmain antpool, you must:
- go to the registration page;
- enter your email, password and captcha;
- agree to the rules and click create an account;
- enter the phone number;
- we receive an SMS code;
- Confirm your account and log in to the pool.
You must create your own USER ID instead of "antminer". It is not necessary to change the miner's name and antminer s9 password in the worker section, they were created automatically. To stop mining if the temperature of the antminer S9 is close to the critical point, check the “Stoprunningwhentemperatureisover 80” box. This way you will avoid overheating of the device during the hot season. You can control the antminer S9 temperature and noise by adjusting the speed of the coolers. In the “AdvancedSettings” section you can adjust the clock frequency of the device chips. Using this option you can slow down or speed up mining of antminer S9. Do not exceed permissible frequency variation limits. The parameters for each batch are listed on the Bitmain website. After the start, in the “MinerStatus” section, you need to check the antminer S9 mining statistics. Don't expect the data to appear instantly, it takes some time. If there are no statistics for a long time, reboot the miner and contact support.
In order to change the mining pool on antminer S9, you must:
- stop mining by pressing reset;
- log into the ASIC configurator using the network address;
- replace the data of the first pool;
For example, to configure antminer s9 nicehash:
- In the URL field enter stratum+tcp://sha256.eu.nicehash.com
- Worker wallet address NiceHash
- Password x
Click “Save” and reboot. If the pool replacement fails, you need to flash antminer S9.
Also, as an example, consider the registration process on Antpool. It will not require much effort from the user, since the interface of the official portal has been partially translated into Russian. During the first login, you will need to create a personal account, which will later be used for cryptocurrency mining (in this regard, it is recommended to save it).
To subsequently configure the device for a specific account, nothing else is needed. After registering an account, you need to visit the Antminer S9 web interface and replace the word antminer with the name of the created account. In this case, the worker name specified after the underscore, as well as the password, do not need to be replaced, since the latter are generated automatically. It is recommended to leave the restriction regarding stopping the operation of the device when the temperature rises above 80 degrees. Despite the fact that the chips themselves can heat up to 100 degrees or more, experts do not recommend experimenting. The ideal operating temperature for chips should not exceed 80 degrees, and for boards - 50.
The user can also independently set the following parameters in Antminer S9:
- Fan speed. It is recommended to install provided that the room temperature does not change.
- Clock speed of the chips. It is recommended to set it at 600 MHz for weaker models and 650 MHz for models with a performance of 14 TH/s.
Video cards will remain only for video games
And so, now the difficulty of mining Bitcoin is very high, so doing it with video cards is becoming increasingly unprofitable, the only thing that compensates for the exchange rate so far is that most video cards are used to mine Ethereum, which began to grow in 2022 and can still be mined on GPUs chips, even on average video cards, but this is for the time being, until Antminer bitmain Ethereum came out.
Cons of video cards
- Difficulty of assembly - to create a farm, you need to buy or make a frame for mounting the equipment
- Cost - top video cards for mining start at 30,000 because of the hucksters, and you end up with an overpayment of 300 percent.
- Quantity - you need at least 6 of them for the farm
- The heat generated - each video card you have will heat up to 80 degrees or higher, now multiply this by 6 and calculate what it will be like in such a room
- Purchase of additional equipment - motherboard, special for 6 video cards, riser, processor, SSD drive, power supply
- Maintenance of errors and jambs of the operating system - do not think that by installing Windows or Linux you will not have problems with drivers or other features in the operation of your video cards when mining cryptocurrency, you will decide everything yourself, this is good if you are a techie, but if not, then you will have to hire a third party, which is not very good, since you don’t need unnecessary advertising.
- Dimensions - any farm, by definition, will occupy more physical space
- Noise - well, there’s nothing to say
- Dust - since the entire farm will be open, keep in mind that you will have to monitor the level of contamination of the fans, otherwise everything will get hotter and break down faster
- Failure - do not think that by overclocking your video card and pushing it to the extreme, it will not die, its wear rate will increase greatly under such loads and replacing it will not be a very simple matter
- Lack of video cards on the market - due to mining, everything that is possible has already been sold out and you have to look for alternatives
- High power consumption
- Long payback time - ROI for video cameras is very high, from 4 to infinity.
Main features and capabilities of the S9 model
S9 was conceived and implemented by Bitmain specialists as an energy-efficient tool for mining cryptocurrencies that operate using SHA-256. The most popular of them are BTC (bitcoin) and BCH (bitcoin cash). The ASIC case is made of aluminum and looks like an elongated rectangle with coolers located on the front and rear panels. This design solution provides excellent ventilation of internal working units: excess heat is removed by air flow using a minimum number of fans.
The top of the Antminer S9 serves as a platform for the Ethernet network controller, an SD card slot and two LED indicators. The internal content of the device consists of three parallel processor boards, each of which is connected to VM-1387 chips. Excess heat is removed through radiators installed next to the boards.
The main advantages of the S9 miner are excellent technical parameters and quality of components with compact dimensions and light weight. Thus, with an electricity consumption level of 1300 W, the system produces 13.5 +/- 5% HP, which is much higher compared to previous versions. The working base consists of 16-RM chips, which help increase the speed when calculating hash algorithms. A total of 189 chips, spread across three boards, combine to achieve a fantastic hashrate of 13.5 TeraHash per second, a result that would have been hard to believe just recently.
Meanwhile, the miniaturization of semiconductors in order to increase energy efficiency and computing power, within the framework of the technology used today, has almost reached its limit. Moore's law no longer applies because the growth in the speed of information transmission has slowed down, approaching the physical limit.
The 16nm manufacturing process used in the S9 is the most efficient upgrade from 28nm. And although 10nm chips are already on the way, the subsequent increase exceeds the boundaries of realistically possible values.
Briefly about the advantages of ASIC S9:
- better energy efficiency;
- high performance with small device sizes;
- full cooling;
- absolute autonomy of work;
- the ability to easily and quickly configure Antminer S9;
- unpretentiousness to external conditions;
- availability of Linux;
- the ability to fully update the Antminer S9 firmware in accordance with the usual official update procedures;
- highly efficient Bitmain power supply;
- Possibility of combining into a common farm.
Among the disadvantages of ASIC S9, it is worth highlighting increased noise. Initially, the device was developed for industrial use, so its authors did not take care of reducing fan noise. It is best to install the S9 in a separate room with a tightly closed door or replace the fans.
The device also has poor compatibility with most mining pools, with exceptions including Antpool and F2 Pool. Another disadvantage is the lack of a power supply included in the package (add another $170-$200 to the cost).

All these babies, only for pre-orders and only in bitcoins or litecoins, YOU WILL NOT BUY THEM FOR DOLLARS ANYMORE. I'll talk about it below.
Where and how to find out the next sales date
It’s a logical question, if you have joined a group of people who want to engage in mining at a high level, then you need to buy equipment, preferably from the manufacturer and at the lowest price, because if you look at Avito or other services, then people there are simply going crazy, trying to sell you a product that has not yet been produced at exorbitant prices.
As is customary in the West, all official company or political news is conveyed via Twitter, quickly and conveniently, the company bitmain is no exception.
Official Twitter of bitmain - https://twitter.com/bitmaintech
So stay tuned for news about the next waves of Antminer bitmain sales. The last one was in August, I’ll tell you how it was. On August 3, 2022, the first batch of Antminer D3 was put up for sale, there was a wild excitement, according to the old rules, those people who managed to place an order were given 7 days to pay for it and then it started, the whole Avito was filled with announcements that they were selling Antminer D3, at double or triple price, with delivery and all that, and there were a lot of such hucksters.
Like here’s an asshole from Nizhny Novgorod who just managed to add it to the order, but didn’t pay for it and is trying to sell it for 4 times more expensive, with a note like they need to be there before August 7th, which immediately shows that they haven’t bought anything yet.
Other guys wrote that we had already bought a batch of 450 pieces, at a price of 180,000, I told them to send orders for payment, that you did everything, sent it, in the end it turned out that only completed orders and not for 450 pieces, and at 20, 50, in short, divorce in one word. Then it turns out that 180,000 is the price of a wholesale batch of 50 pieces, but if you take up to 10, it will cost 230,000, so here are the pitfalls.
The bitmain company looked at all this big tent, when people ordered and did not pay, and made a smart move, where now all goods are purchased only for BITCOINS AND LITECOINS and they are given not 7 days to pay for the order as before, but only 1 hour. After which, on August 9, all the hucksters who did not pay went to hell and their orders were cancelled, thereby giving the green light to normal buyers. On August 11, hacking began at 6 a.m. Moscow time for Antminer D3.
How to choose ASIC for mining
How to choose an ASIC
Since the main goal of any miner is to make a good profit, the choice of an ASIC device must be approached with the utmost seriousness.
The first step is to select a hashing algorithm that should be supported by the ASIC - the list of cryptocurrencies available for mining with its help will depend on this.
The next point you need to pay attention to when choosing an ASIC miner is its computing power (hashrate). It is this indicator that will primarily determine the mining performance and the profit received.
An equally important point is the power consumption of the ASIC. Don't forget that the ASIC miner will have to work almost non-stop to ensure the highest possible profit. This means that the higher the ASIC's power consumption, the higher the energy bills will be. Given these costs, purchasing an ASIC may well prove unprofitable to begin with. If electricity is expensive, and the ASIC itself “eats” a lot of electricity, but its hashrate is already slightly outdated, the profit will be minimal (if any).
The approximate profitability of an ASIC that is being considered for purchase can be estimated using various mining calculators, most often located on mining pool websites, for example, NiceHash.
You also need to decide on the amount you are willing to spend, since the price of the ASIC will directly affect its performance and energy efficiency. If the goal is to start mining cryptocurrency as soon as possible, you will have to buy from local online sellers, who inflate the official price by 20–30 and even 40%. If you can wait, it is better to pre-order an ASIC from the manufacturer with delivery in a few months.
